Instructions

  • This is a short assessment you can take to find out if you have enough APA citation experience to do the rest of the work in this course comfortably.
  • This assessment is a good reflection of what I would expect you to know at this time to be able to work effectively with APA this quarter.
  • When you are finished, check your answers. If you miss more than one, please do the APA citation basics in the Week 10 Grab Bag, sooner rather than later.
  • You may take this self-assessment only once.

I do not specifically teach APA citations* as a regular module. You get practice with APA citations throughout the quarter, and I provide models and links to APA citation guides throughout.

I do offer APA citation basics in the Week 10 Grab Bag. If you feel like you need work on your APA citation skills sooner rather than later, you can do that Exercise at any time.

*The reasons that I don't take time to teach APA citations specifically:

  1. I assume because you have reached this level that you have had some experience with APA citation either through English, LS 101, or some other research-writing-based class. Even if that is not true, see #3.
  2. Because we primarily work with scholarly journal articles in this course,  there is really only one model of APA citation you need to learn at the moment! And once you learn that model, the rest will be easier.
  3. APA citation is largely mimicry: Look at a model, do exactly as it shows.
  4. Research for writing in the social sciences and APA is much more than citation, so I don't want to take precious time away from larger issues that are more valuable in the long-run. Believe me, you can make APA citations. That's the easy part. Never confuse tedious with difficult... :)

Click here to see a short guide to APA citation that I put together. I swear to you here, by all that is dear to me, that guide and its linked materials are all you will need to cite APA in your classes. It is more than what you need for this course.
