□ Online assignment #6: Watching the Detectives

Instructions: This week we are looking at how images of investigation fit with the creation of detective fiction and with new areas of scientific research such as forensic analysis. In this episode of a 1970s detective series there are four main characters:

1. Mr. Columbo (Los Angeles Police Department detective)

2. Dr. Barry Mayfield (junior research scientist)

3. Dr. Edward Hidemann (senior research scientist)

4. Nurse Sharon Martin

Your blog post should be based on the following:
As you watch the episode you will be looking for what values each of these characters displays. For Dr. M and Dr. H, what are their primary character traits? [Choose 4 for each] In what ways do these traits present a set of ingredients for defining what "science" is? What similarities and differences are there? What accounts for these?

With the detective, we can hypothesize that he is a hybrid character: he uses ways of thinking that can fit with scientific practice, but he also displays traits that place him in the everyday world that doesn't necessarily foreground scientific traits. [Choose 3 that are scientific, and 3 that can be seen as just ordinary traits]

With the nurse, where does she fit within the continuum of scientific to non-scientific? [Choose 3 traits].
