Overview

This week we're continuing our round-up of potpourri topics. Our first topic is on alcohol (called ethanol by medical professionals) as seen from a scientific perspective. Our second is on sodium and water/hydration. As you'll see, sodium and water are intricately connected.

Module Objectives

In this module, our activities, content, and assignments will help you do the following:

Topic: Alcohol

State how many calories are in 1 gram of alcohol.
Define drinking in moderation, binge drinking, and excessive drinking per the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Acknowledge when health benefits of alcohol become health risks.
Identify standard drink sizes for beer, wine, wine coolers, and hard liquor.
List 6 groups of people who should not consume any alcohol, per the Dietary Guidelines.
Understand how the metabolism of alcohol causes fatty liver and eventually cirrhosis.
Describe how alcohol spills into the bloodstream.
Identify how caffeine causes negative effects when consumed with alcohol.
Name the recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for women who are pregnant or who are breastfeeding.

Topic 2: Water and Sodium

List the 6 functions of water in the body.
Describe how to increase water intake.
Describe 4 ways in which water is lost from the body.
List 5 symptoms of dehydration.
Name 2 major functions of sodium.
Describe the major source of sodium in the American diet.
Identify 3 health risks for high sodium diets.
Modify a diet to reduce the sodium content.
