OVERVIEW
The success of the mechanical philosophy underlying the construct of the clockwork universe for explaining such complex problems in the physical sciences such as describing the phenomenon of gravity was widely heralded. This model was so authoritative that many natural philosophers immediately sought to apply the concept of the machine to living beings. While there were advantages to doing so -- conceptualizing the heart as a pump, for example -- the mechanical model failed to account for the phenomenon of "life" itself: machines cannot generate a living version of itself. Nor can one take apart a cat, for example, and put it back to together and have it "work" (as one can with a clock) because whatever renders the cat alive is unaccounted for.

Primary Source Project #1 (Part 2, Response Addendum). In the next three primary source projects each student will review the commentary produced by other members of their group and use what they learn to produce a 250-350 response attached as an addendum to their original commentary that reflects on what they learned in relation to their own commentary. Note: Dr. Pandora will provide the responses for this week to model the possibilities for reflection -- students will review the document she produces and fill out a short questionnaire.
