Track 2-NGO Sector

If you have signed up for this track, you undoubtable have an interest in how NGOs can work to alleviate the refugee/migrant crisis in the Mediterranean region. As a group, you need to develop a new NGO that will address some aspect of the problem. This needs to be a “real” as it can be, but feel free to use your imaginations in terms of resources etc.

First- I would suggest a brainstorming session with three topics A: what might we do to help and B: where will be help out and C. who (from where) are we helping. This is not set in stone, just start exploring these issues.

Second- There are a number of NGOs and many of them are working on the refugee/migrant issue. Once you have narrowed down your plans somewhat, your next step will be to do a community map. All this means is an assessment of what is currently going on. You need to know what actors are involved and how they interact. What other NGOs are involved specifically in the city/state etc. you want to work in and what are they doing. Where is there a need that you can fill. Perhaps it is to be an umbrella organization, or maybe to link two likeminded organizations. Or maybe there is a gap that you can fill. You can not really understand the impact you can have until you do the community map. Traditionally this might be done with computer programing to create a visual interpretation, but you can map in words as well.

Third- Once your map is done, reassess your goals. Now it is time to develop your NGO. You will want to define the issue and explain your relevance as an organization. You will also want to come up with a name and a symbol as well as a mission statement. What will the organization’s structure look like? How will you be culturally sensitive? Who will you be working with in the local community/region etc.? How will you raise money and on what will you spend that money? What will success look like and how will it be measured? What obstacles might you face and how will you address them? What are your future plans? And so on.

This is a big task, and I understand that. Yet, I am excited to see what you come up with. I am also here to advise along the way, so don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to bounce some ideas off someone.
