OVERVIEW
The motto of the Enlightenment philosophers was "Sapere Aude!" (Dare to Know!) as articulated in an essay by Immanuel Kant, "What is Enlightenment?" Certain that knowledge produced in the eighteenth century put humanity on a new intellectual footing, how to disseminate this knowledge was a concern that led to creating new formats such as the Encyclopedie edited by Denis Diderot and Jean d'Alembert. While the encyclopedia was an inherited format the scale and scope of the Encyclopedie transformed the genre and also the question of how far knowledge should be shared. Consisting of 28 volumes containing 71,818 articles and 3,129 illustrations. The first volume was published in 1751 and the final one in 1772. Questions about natural knowledge were prominently featured and served as a new educational opportunity for the wider public.

The website and podcast for this module highlight issues regarding who was to have access to scientific knowledge and how, and who was permitted to participate as a natural philosopher. These issues will recur throughout all of the subsequent modules.
