Communicating with the Instructor

Students are expected to Canvas messaging to communicate with the instructor, not regular email. Canvas messages automatically include course information in the message heading, which makes it easier for the instructor to respond to your questions and concerns.

If you set up your notification preferences to forward notifications to your "regular" email (work or personal, as opposed to your OU email address), you can receive important timely notifications without having to enter Canvas. You can also reply without having to enter Canvas.

Critical Notifications

While there is an extensive list of notifications in Canvas, there are only two critical ones that you need in order to stay up to the minute:

  • Conversations - This is the Canvas mechanism by which you'll be notified of Canvas messages sent to you personally.
  • Announcements - This is the Canvas mechanism by which you'll be notified of Live Session cancellations, assignment changes, or any other significant course change that affects everyone enrolled in the course.

Communication Expectations

All students are expected to be current with all announcements and Canvas messages, but you are free to choose the method that works best for you: having these communications pushed to you via Canvas or personally checking these mechanisms regularly in Canvas. Step-by-step instructions are on the next page of the module, should you wish assistance with the "push" option.

By clicking on the red "Take the Survey" button, you are acknowledging your responsibility to read and stay current with announcements and Canvas messages.
