Overview

This week's module will focus on introducing our second geochemical model PHREEQC and developing a simple equilibrium model in PHREEQC. A big question may be why are we moving from MINTEQ to PHREEQC? As you will find out, PHREEQC has quite a bit more capacity to model more complex geochemical reactions including advection and simple 1-D reaction transport of solutes. PHREEQC is an open access geochemical model developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) with the intention of providing a geochemical model that can also be interphase with other models including MINTEQ. As a result, PHREEQC is very common in academia, research, and industry to support geochemical modeling needs. This week we will also discuss limitations of PHREEQC and cover how to input data and run an equilibrium model in PHREEQC.
