Lesson 8: Freud and the New Science of the Mind

This week we will examine the work of the Viennese physician and founder of pyschoanalysis Sigmund Freud.  Freud had an enormous influence, not just on the new fields of psychology and psychiatry, but on art, literature and culture more broadly.  There are two assigned readings for this lesson, a brief overview of Freud's thought and his significance from the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy and Freud's own book Civilization and its Discontents.  I have linked to an on-line version of this book.  It is also available in inexpensive paperback form if you prefer to have a hard copy.  In addition, I have included a short (2 minute) video clip on Freud.
