Course Assignments

Required course work consists of:

  • Participation in small group discussions
  • Participation in class forum discussions
  • Weekly quizzes
  • Research paper (ca. 7 pages)
  • Wkipedia article
  • Midterm exam
  • Final exam

QUIZZES cover material from the readings and learning activities. Quizzes are open note and you may consult with other students when taking them. Once you start you have 20 minutes to complete the quiz. Quizzes must be completed by WEDNESDAY AT 11:59 PM.

There are two types of discussion in this class: small group discussion and class forums. We will have one of each type of discussion each week. Your participation grade will be based on the quantity and quality of your contributions to these discussions.

For the SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION, you will be divided (randomly) into 8 groups of 5-6 students each. There will be a discussion prompt (generally between one and three questions). You are required to make at least one original post responding to the prompt, and at least three responses to other students’ posts. In addition, you should respond to any direct question about your post from the instructor or another student. All posts to small group discussion must be completed by FRIDAY AT 11:59 PM.

The CLASS FORUMS involve the entire class. Requirements for the number and types of posts on the class forum will vary, so please read directions carefully. All posts to the class forum must be completed by SUNDAY AT 11:59 PM.

There will a RESEARCH PAPER on an assigned topic. This will be at least 7 pages, and involve reading outside of class material. The paper is due OCTOBER 9 AT 11:59 PM, and should be submitted electronically.

The class as a whole will contribute to the WikiProject Women scientists Links to an external site.. Each student will write a Wikipedia article on a female scientist who either currently does not have a Wikipedia entry or has only a stub. This article is due DECEMBER 4 AT 11:59 PM.

There will be a MIDTERM and a FINAL EXAM. Both will consist of a mixture of quiz questions, short answer questions and an essay question. Both exams are open note. Both exams will have a two hour time limit. The midterm opens OCTOBER 10 and closes OCTOBER 16 AT 11:59 PM. The final opens DECEMBER 10 and closes DECEMBER 15 AT 11:59 PM.
