Creating Lecture Presentations

Creating Lecture Presentations

Instructor-produced educational videos are an important component of online courses that enhance learning and student success when they are made well. It is important to know which types of video to use in an online course, and how to create effective educational videos.

Think about:

  • What topics will you dive deeper into?
  • What topics/areas need additional attention?

Important! Learn how to make slides that help students learn: Adapting PowerPoints for Online Presentations

Tips for narrated presentations:

  • VIDEO LENGTH: When possible break up the videos into smaller, more digestible segments.
  • USE A SCRIPT: Using a script makes the video more focused and concise, reduces the amount of “umm”, “uhhh”, and other filler words, and facilitates the production of captions for ADA compliance. It takes more work at the beginning, but it produces a more effective and well paced video that will hold students’ interest longer.
  • BEGINNING AND ENDING RECORDING: After recording begins, wait a couple of seconds before speaking. Before ending recording, wait a couple of seconds.  Allowing a bit of silence helps make sure nothing is accidentally missing from the recording, and any unwanted silence can be cut out later.
  • INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSION: Begin each video with a very brief description of what the video is about: “In this video, we will be…”.  End each video with a brief closing statement such as “This concludes the Lesson 3 video.” or “In the next video in this series…” or “In the next lesson…”, etc.
  • TIE TO ASSESSMENTS: Students are significantly more likely to watch and retain information from videos that are clearly tied to graded assessments.

Presentation Tools

There are several methods you can use to create your presentations.  Many instructors are now using Zoom to create video presentations. Using Zoom as a presentation recoding tool lets you combine video of yourself with screen capture of slides, websites, articles, etc.  Alternatively, you can record narration directly onto your slides in PowerPoint.

Guides to each of these and other methods can be found on the Online and Academic Technology Website. Click the links below to be taken to each page.

If you are faculty or staff and you are looking to create short video announcements or introductions, Adobe Express Video is a simple to use tool that comes as a part of the Adobe Creative Cloud provided to you by the University.

No matter how you choose to create your presentations, you may need to store them in MyMedia before you can add them to your course. View the guide below for instructions.
