Instructions
Once you begin the exam, you will have 3.5 hours to complete the exam and upload your work.
- YOU MUST SHOW ALL WORK and upload it to receive credit for the exam!!! Partial credit WILL BE GIVEN where appropriate. The final question will ask you to upload your work.
- Questions will be presented one at a time and locked after you submit the answer to the question. DO NOT submit the question answer until you are ready. You won't be able to go back and change the answer submitted.
- IGNORE the REPORTED SCORE after you submit the exam. YOUR SCORE will be based heavily on the partial credit for your methods and procedures shown on your written work. You must show correct work to receive full credit for each problem. I will post your actual exam score to Canvas when I complete the grading.
- To receive credit for the exam YOU MUST indicate your willingness to abide by the integrity pledge, which is the first question.
- This is an open book exam. You should use your notes, course lectures and textbook to help you answer the questions.
- YOU MAY NOT seek assistance in answering the questions, from any other person before or during the exam.
- You may submit handwritten or typed solutions, or a combination of the two. Please write legibly and be neat and organized. Be sure to indicate to which question your work corresponds. DO NOT SUBMIT Excel spreadsheets. You must show the details of your calculation steps.
- Complete the exam and upload your work to Canvas as a single file (PDF preferred) by midnight on Sunday, 5/12/2024. I will accept cell phone photo scans of your work on initial submission by the specified time, if that is all you have to scan with. However, you may be asked to provide a higher quality PDF scan if the quality is not good.
- IMPORTANT: If you have any problems uploading your written or typed work for this exam to Canvas before the exam times out, you can e-mail your written or typed work directly to gamiller@ou.eduwithin 5 minutes of the end time.
In performing bearing capacity calculations for concentrically loaded footings use the general bearing capacity equation (Eq. 6.28 in the 9th edition of the textbook, or Eq. 5.30 in the 10th edition). Use the corresponding bearing capacity factors for these equations (Eqs. 6.29 to 6.31 in the 9th edition or Eqs. 5.31 to 5.33 in the 10th edition, or the corresponding Tables 6.2 or 5.3, respectively). For shape, depth and inclination factors, as needed, use Table 6.3 in the 9th edition or Table 5.4 in the 10th edition.
