About This Chapter
From reading this chapter, you learned that social class is ascribed to us depending on the class we were born in, and while achievement and personal gain of capital can aid in social mobility, our initial starting point forms a foundation for how we view the world around us. You were then given examples of social class from a communication perspective. Finally, you were given the definition of poverty—the extent to which an individual does without resources—and you learned of the culture of poverty.
As you reflect on what you’ve learned from this chapter, keep in mind that social class is a complex piece of a person’s identity that comprises many different components. Reflect on your own social class status and try to observe some of the hidden rules of social class that change the ways in which you communicate with others.
