About This Chapter
In this chapter, you learned what it means to be healthy, and you overviewed what is studied in the field of health communication. You then learned about two different models of health care and which perspectives the East and West align themselves with; the biomedical model looks for physical signs of what is wrong, while the biopsychosocial model acknowledges that illness is not always just a physical thing. The importance of cultural differences in medical contexts was then discussed, and you learned about diversity within healthcare and medical organizations. Finally, you overviewed how some cultures experience marginalization within health care and how that can impact health care outcomes and health literacy. As you continue your study of intercultural communication, reflect on how cultural differences can impact the quality of care a person receives.
