About This Chapter

From this chapter, you overviewed diversity and its relation to workplace and professional contexts. You began by learning the definition of diversity—the representation of various differences in a shared space. You then learned about the importance of cultural competence in the workplace, and you overviewed how discrimination can be related to your study of intercultural communication. Next, you were shown how cultural competence applies to the requirements of professional excellence in the workplace. Finally, you learned how power in the workplace can be both good and bad; you learned how power can lead to a hostile work environment, discrimination, and workplace bullying. As you finish your study of intercultural communication, think about the importance of diversity in both your current and future work environments.
