About This Chapter
Being able to recognize and manage diversity in the group context can help you become a more effective communicator and can lead to some positive experiences and fruitful outcomes. Groups are different from teams, which require more shared leadership, greater accountability, and higher standards of performance. In addition, according to the functional perspective, groups need to maintain a balance between task and relational roles to be effective. Group members can also represent diversity in terms of individualism and collectivism, power distance, high- and low-context cultures, and feminine and masculine orientation. When group members align themselves along group faultlines, the resulting subgroups can become even more different from one another. Diversity does not occur just within the group; we also have to consider differences between groups as they pertain to intergroup communication. Social identity theory explains how group members develop a sense of belonging based on common characteristics, often distinguishing themselves from out-group members.
