As an introduction to the German Energiewende, I'm providing two sources: one is about the vision of a carbon-neutral Germany; one is about the hard realities of getting there. This first assignment should take about 1.5 hour (maximum) to complete.

1) Open this survey (quiz) "Introduction to the Energiewende" in one tab so you can fill it out as you work through the two sources. It allows unlimited time and unlimited tries (but if you submit it and try again, you might have to start over).

2) Please watch this animated video (16 minutes) that represents one futuristic attempt to imagine how energy systems in Germany could work in 2045 if the Energy Transition succeeds. It does not represent an "official" plan, but draws on many of the technologies and approaches currently under discussion. The survey will ask you to identify three aspects of the vision that you find particularly intriguing, promising, or problematic.

3) Read this overview of the Energiewende and where it stands as of 2024. Here too, the survey will ask you for some major takeaways.
