The University of Oklahoma's Graduate College requires all master's programs to have an "end of program assessment." For the Master in Museum Studies, the capstone course fills that role.

Within the capstone course, students will develop an e-Portfolio which includes artifacts from course work and gives an opportunity for students to share about their learning. The e-Portfolio is a website created with Google sites. In addition to being a required element of the master's degree, some students use their e-Portfolios in job seeking to showcase their skills and knowledge. Creating the e-Portfolio requires professional skills that graduates are likely to use in the workplace such as writing goals and objectives, writing reports on progress, synthesizing information across sources, writing a professional resume, and reflecting on one's personal philosophy and skills.

The general goals of the e-Portfolio Capstone Project are to provide an opportunity for students to integrate their learning across the entire MAMS program and to develop skills and awareness in the management of their professional career. The specific objectives of the e-Portfolio capstone project are for students to present their cumulative accomplishments in the MAMS program, to reflect on their significant learning in the program, to reflect on their career goals and how the work completed in the program has moved one toward those goals, and to demonstrate meeting their ongoing learning goals.

In the e-Portfolio, students will:

Present their cumulative accomplishments in the Museum Studies program;
Reflect on their significant learning in the program;
Reflect on their career goals and how the work completed in the program has moved them toward those goals;
Demonstrate meeting their ongoing learning goals; and
Demonstrate the importance of professional standards to developing their learning and career goals.

Since this course fulfills the Graduate College's requirement of an end of program assessment, there are certain regulations that it must adhere to. You can read about these regulations in the Graduate College Bulletin's section on "master's non-thesis exam," but here are the main points:

The e-Portfolio will be graded by a committee, not just by the course instructor
You have two chances to pass the Capstone class by successfully passing your e-Portfolio committee review. The Graduate College refers to these as two "attempts"
- If you do not pass the e-Portfolio, you must re-do it in a subsequent semester, within one year of the first attempt
- If you do not pass your second attempt, you will not receive the master's degree

The e-Portfolio within the Capstone course replaces the comprehensive exam and thesis options that were part of the previous design of this degree.
