Course Materials

Text

The electronic edition of Managerial Accounting 16th edition by Garrison/Noreen/Brewer, McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2018. (ISBN 9781259995378) You purchase it through the McGraw-Hill tab in Canvas. This purchase will include the ebook and access to McGraw-Hill Connect as well as access to student resources. If you prefer a hard copy McGraw-Hill will sell you one after you purchase the ebook for a discount or you can find a used book. However, if you buy a used book you will still need to purchase access to Connect.

Equipment

Access to the internet on a portable device. All exams, homework and quizzes will be administered in online through Connect.

Course Timelines

Weekly course units will be available from Monday – Sunday, with each week ending on Sunday, all times being noted in Central Time. You will access weekly materials and content online through McGraw-Hill Connect. Each week will contain activities and assignments with specific due dates throughout the week. You will be able to login at any time to complete your coursework.

Course Communication

Announcements and other course information will be made via Canvas; please check it regularly.

All email sent by your instructor (important announcements, grade information, etc.) will be sent to the email address registered in your name at the University of Oklahoma. If you wish to also receive course emails at another email address, go to your profile in Canvas and you can add 1 or more alternate emails to your account.

Course Grades

Your grade will be comprised of Learnsmart Assignments, Connect Homework, Quizzes and Exams. You should monitor Canvas throughout the term of the course. Up-to-date grades will be available there for you to review. I use the traditional 90/80/70/60 cutoff for assigning grades. You should not expect a curve at the end of the course.

If you think I have made an error in grading any item from this course, the final day to see me to make your case to adjust your grade is 10 calendar days after the date of the test/quiz or due date of the homework assignment. On the 11th day, all grades are final and no further adjustments shall be made.

Course Components

Exams

One midterm and one final exam will be given.  As the material in this course is mutually exclusive, the final exam will not be cumulative but only cover the course material since the mid-term exam.

The exams will be administered through Connect.

No make-ups will be given for missed exams. If a student contacts the instructor with a university-excused absence prior to the exam, the instructor will make arrangements for you to take the exam prior to the scheduled exam date.

Homework

All of the homework is to be completed online through McGraw-Hill Connect. How to enroll in the homework manager is provided above in the course material section. You can enroll for free for a couple of weeks before you have to pay the fee. The homework comes in two forms:

1. Learnsmart: You work until it is complete.

2. Homework problems: You are limited to 1 attempt.

All assignments are due on the due date. No late work will be accepted. After the assignment closes, it will be available with the correct answers for study and review. All homework grades will be automatically posted to Canvas. I recommend you do your own work and learn from the assignments. If you do not do your own work, the likelihood of you being successful on the examinations diminishes greatly.

Live Sessions

Interaction and participation in online academic activities is an absolute necessity to ensure your academic success. The interaction between professor and learners, and amongst learners, is an integral part of any successful educational process. A collaborative and diverse environment promotes a deeper understanding of the topics and themes discussed in courses, and opens lines of communication with fellow classmates and your professors.

Each Tuesday from 7:00 - 8:30 pm (Central), I will host a virtual class in real time. The sessions will focus on the learning objectives associated with the week's topic(s). During that time, I will demonstrate solutions, work through multiple examples and answer any questions you may have. These sessions are provided for your benefit. I will record each session and post a link to the recording in case you are not able to join us in real time.

Late Policy

I encourage you to not wait until the deadline to complete any assignment. Doing so puts you at risk of not getting credit for it if you have a technological problem and time expires before you can resolve the problem. Numerous times I have been told that with one minute left before the deadline the internet crashed and a student could not submit the assignment even though they had it completed. Deadlines are just that. Make them or lose the points. It is incumbent upon you to plan for the unforeseen and get it done. The real world is tough and unforgiving. You need to get used to planning your time to avoid these types of issues. It is really all on you. It is part of being a good manager.

Working Ahead

Students will be able to work ahead in their class. However, you may not get behind.

Extra Credit

Do not ask me for extra credit. Keep up on the reading. I will not give extra credit.

Withdrawal

You are free to follow the university guidelines and withdraw from class as you deem appropriate. However, I will not approve withdrawals after the withdrawal deadline unless you suffer a serious medical situation or suffer a personal tragedy that can be documented that reasonably prevents you from finishing the course. If you think you might want to withdraw and attempt the course later, please do so by the deadline. Otherwise you will be expected to complete the course.

Academic Misconduct

In addition to the course conduct policies outlined by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook.

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies and procedures concerning academic misconduct.  The Student Code is available from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and is contained in the Student’s Guide to Academic Integrity, available at http://integrity.ou.edu/students_guide.html This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Go to http://integrity.ou.edu/students_guide.html to learn more about the rules for avoiding plagiarism. Test your skills in avoiding plagiarism by taking the library’s plagiarism tutorial, available at https://libraries.ou.edu/content/academic-integrity-tutorial

Reasonable Accommodation for Disabilities
The University of Oklahoma is committed to providing reasonable accommodation for all students with disabilities. Students with disabilities who require accommodations in this course should contact their professor as early in the semester as possible.

Students with disabilities must be registered with the Disability Resource Center prior to receiving accommodations in this course.

If you have a disability and you would like to make a request for reasonable accommodation, please see the Graduate Student Handbook or visit the Disability Resource Center and other disability services at OU at: http://drc.ou.edu/

Adjustments for Pregnancy/Childbirth Related Issues

Should you need modifications or adjustments to your course requirements because of documented pregnancy-related or childbirth-related issues, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss. Generally, modifications will be made where medically necessary and similar in scope to accommodations based on temporary disability. Please see www.ou.edu/content/eoo/faqs/pregnancy-faqs.html for commonly asked questions.

Title IX Resources

For any concerns regarding gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, or intimate partner violence, the University offers a variety of resources, including advocates on-call 24.7, counseling services, mutual no contact orders, scheduling adjustments and disciplinary sanctions against the perpetrator. Please contact the Sexual Misconduct Office 405-325-2215 (8-5, M-F) or OU Advocates 405-615-0013 (24.7) to learn more or to report an incident.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Copyright Policy

It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent.  The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user’s access to some or all of the university’s computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the course work without doing the required paperwork your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course.  Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of Admissions and Records or online at http://www.ou.edu/admissions/home/academic_calendar.html

Student Grievances

In addition to any policies outlined related to submitting an informal or formal grievance by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook for more information about the process of submitting a formal grievance.
