CEES 5653: ADVANCED MECHANICS OF MATERIALS

FALL 2018

Online Course - 3 credit hour

 

Prerequisites: CEES 2153 or PE 2153 and senior or graduate standing

Textbook: Advanced Mechanics of Materials by Arthur P. Boresi and Richard J. Schmidt, 6th Edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2003.

Course Description: This course will examine principal stresses and strains; theories of failure; introduction to elasticity; unsymmetrical bending and shear; torsion of noncircular solid cross sections, cellular sections, and open sections; introduction to plate bending and buckling. 

Course Objectives: To provide students with an advanced engineering practice-oriented analysis course. This course aims to expand and enrich knowledge and understanding of applied mechanics as used in the field of structural engineering.

Course Format: This course is entirely online. The course is made up of modules. Each module is made up of readings, lecture videos, discussions, Live Sessions, homework, quizzes and exams. The modules will open and close on specified dates. You will work through each module and complete the required tasks. You must complete the module and its contents before it closes. 

Course Topics: The following is a general list of the course topics.
1. Introduction
2. Review of Vectors, Matrices & Vector Calculus
3. Theories of Stress & Strain
4. General Material Constitutive Relationships
5. Bending of Straight Beams (Unsymmetrical Bending)
6. Shear Center of Thin-Walled Cross Sections
7. Torsion of Circular, Open, Closed & Multicell Sections
8. Beams on Elastic Foundations

Discussions: Throughout the course, you will be required to participate in online discussions. Your participation in discussions should be value-adding and respectful to your instructor and your classmates. 

Live Sessions: Each week, you will participate in a Live Session via Zoom. Live Sessions are an opportunity for you to connect with your instructor and your classmates in real time to discuss topics of interest, ask questions, etc. The Live Sessions will be recorded and posted online for you to review, as needed. You will receive participation points for attending the Live Sessions. If you are unable to attend the Live Sessions, you will have the opportunity to complete an alternate assignment to make up the points. 

Homework: Problem sets will be given throughout the semester and will have a specified due date. Your solutions should be neatly organized on engineering paper, with each problem on a separate page (use the front of the paper only). You will scan and upload your assignments to Canvas for grading. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Quizzes: For each module, you will be responsible for completing a quiz. The quiz will be available during a specified window of time.  In general, you may take the quiz as many times as you like within the specified window of time, with the highest grade recorded in the gradebook.

Exams: Dates for the exams are given below. Makeup exams will only be arranged in special circumstances. Please inform me as soon as possible if you have a conflict. If you do not inform me at least one (1) week before the exam, you will not have the opportunity for a makeup exam.

Exam No. 1: Exam 1 will be open from October 1st at 8:00am CDT until October 7th at 11:59pm CDT. You will have 2 hours (120 minutes) to complete the exam.

Exam No. 2: Exam 2 will be open from November 12th at 8:00am CDT until November 18th at 11:59pm CDT. You will have 2 hours (120 minutes) to complete the exam.

Final Exam: The Final Exam will be available from December 10th at 8:00am CDT until December 14th at 9:00pm CDT. You will have 2 hours (120 minutes) to complete the exam. 

Grades: The final course grade will be weighted as follows:

  •   Exam No. 1:                                                                  20%
  •   Exam No. 2:                                                                  20%
  •   Final Exam:                                                                   20%

Late Policy: Late assignments will not be accepted.

Academic Misconduct

Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the course work without doing the required paperwork your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero.
