What is Secure Sooner?
Secure Sooner is a cybersecurity training course available to all students of the University of Oklahoma. This course was designed by students, for students in the hopes that we can all form cybersecurity habits that will protect us during our time at OU, and beyond.
So, what even is cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity, also sometimes known as Information Security, is the "practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks" (Cisco) (Links to an external site.).
Why does cybersecurity matter?
Imagine that all of your valuable information like your Social Security Number, bank account numbers, etc. are locked away in a bank vault. Good cybersecurity practices represent the vault keeping that data safe from the bank robbers of the internet - hackers. Most hackers are interested in either selling your data to the highest bidder or using it to access larger systems you are a part of - like OU. Each student at the University of Oklahoma is a potential target for anyone attempting to gain access to the entire university.
Although OU has an Information Security department dedicated to preventing and detecting attacks on our university-affiliated accounts and devices even the best Security departments can never stop 100% of the attacks on their systems. That's why it's imperative that as users we know how to protect our devices and data from external attacks.
What will this course cover?
We will cover the basics of five security categories: Apps, Authentication, Communication, Internet, and Physical Security. We hope that by the end of this course you will be able to improve your current security protocols and maintain a new level of digital safety.
How is the course formatted?
Each of the five security categories has its own module that consists of an informational page followed by a short quiz. If you have gone through all of the modules and are hungry for more cybersecurity content we have included a Bonus section full of extra information and resources for you to peruse.
