Late Policy

Late assignments will receive a 20% deduction for each day the assignment is late.  

Exams

Each exam will cover everything from that section of the course, and consist of multiple-choice questions. Readings, PowerPoint slides, exercises and our discussions of the exercises, homework, and your notes from our class discussions are primary sources to study for the exams. Some questions will test your knowledge of the various principles from readings and discussions, while others will test your ability to apply that knowledge in specific situations, or to analyze a situation using principles of effective negotiating.

Class Participation & Professionalism

Attendance, active participation (quantity, quality, and consistency!), and professionalism are critical because the discussions and exercises we do in class form the foundation for skill development in the course. Active participation by preparing, engaging, and consistently sharing every session not only increases what you remember, but enriches the learning experience for everyone. I will assess this grade two ways: with my score, and with your score. After every session I will rate everyone on participation using the following rubric:

  • 0 – absent.
  • 1 – present.
  • 2 – only a few comments, of low quality and consistency.
  • 3 – some quantity and quality of comments, but lacking consistency.
  • 4 – strong in quantity or quality, but not both, and lacking consistency.
  • 5 – high quantity, quality, and consistency of comments.

NOTE: Attendance is required. You will be DOCKED 50 points from your participation score for every class session you miss!!! You may miss one session without penalty, but the second session you miss you will be docked 50 participation points. I will allow one, but only one, makeup assignment if you have to miss more than one session. Discuss details with me. Use electronic devices during our Academy sessions, but only for session purposes.

NOTE: If you miss a class session, and hence that session's negotiation exercise, and don't give me at least three (3) hours notice before the class session, you will be docked AN ADDITIONAL 25 points from the participation grade!!! This rule is to ensure adequate pairing for the exercises and that each student prepares the correct role.

Homework Assignments

You will complete 4 homework assignments in the course which could be completing a self-assessment survey and writing a reflection paper on it, doing a specific negotiation activity on your own and writing a reflection paper on it, or analyzing a negotiation situation and writing a reflection paper on it. I will post written instructions every week.

Exercise Rules  

This class relies heavily on in-class 'role play' exercises during which students will negotiate with one another. Read over the rules on Canvas. 

Negotiation Development Plan

Write a personal development plan focused on your personal negotiation skills. The purpose of this assignment is to integrate what you have learned about yourself and effective negotiations in order to create a plan that will help you further develop these skills. The paper must include a title page and be no more than 5 double-spaced pages in length, using 12 point Times New Roman font and one inch margins. You are welcome to include tables, graphs, or appendices, but they are not required. In addition to an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph, each paper will have three parts: (1) describe in your own words what is required for effective negotiating, (2) describe your own personal negotiating strengths and weaknesses, and (3) describe a few specific goals to continue to develop your skills after the course.

Extra Credit

I will allow a maximum of 20 points of extra credit in the course, and offer two ways to earn extra credit. First, top performers on a predetermined exercise will receive 10 points of extra credit. I will explain specifics when I introduce the specific exercise. Second, students may hand in a negotiation analysis paper worth 10 points, and you may complete 2 of these papers to get all 20 points allowed. Instructions are posted on Canvas, and it will be due the last week of class.

Academic Misconduct

In addition to the course conduct policies outlined by your professor in the Course Syllabus, please review the Graduate Student Handbook. 

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies and procedures concerning academic misconduct. The Student Code is available from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and is contained in the Student’s Guide to Academic Integrity, available at http://integrity.ou.edu/students_guide.html This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct. If academic misconduct is discovered, you will at least receive a zero grade for the assignment, and may receive a failing grade for the course. 

Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Copyright Policy

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the course work without doing the required paperwork your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero.
