Course Purpose

This course will cover gas conditioning and processing from wellhead to burner tip or as raw materials for conversion to petrochemical products. By the end of this course, you will understand the journey that natural gas must undertake to meet consumer requirements/specifications and be able to meet consumer expectations.

Course Format

This is an 8-week course which will be organized into weekly modules on Canvas. Each week you will view the lectures and complete any assignments.

Course Materials

All required course material can be found in the lecture recordings and other materials will be posted on Canvas. I have also attached the presentation slides as a PDF at the bottom of each Unit's "Lecture" page for your convenience.

Though I will not assign required weekly readings from these texts in this course, these will become invaluable resources to which every NGEM student should have access. They will be useful not only in this course, but also the entire program.

Scale

The final course grade will be determined based on the following table:

90-100% A
80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D

Receiving a grade of “D” or less in this course will stop your progression through the Petroleum Engineering curriculum. You will not be allowed to take advanced PE courses until you satisfy the requirement of passing with at least a “C.”  Be aware that this will add a year to your projected graduation date.

 

Course Expectations

University Codes

Course Policies

You are expected to attend and participate in all live class sessions. Notify me of any absence from such sessions as early as possible. If you have any questions for these sessions, please send them to me in advance so that we can discuss them during the Live Sessions.

You are responsible for all the information transmitted during each lecture module. You are also responsible for ensuring that your course assignments are turned in on time.

Scholastic dishonesty, cheating, plagiarism, or any other inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. All such cases will be dealt with according to the University policy. All students are expected to be completely familiar with such policies as outlined in the following University websites: Academic Integrity Resources for Students, Academic Misconduct Code, and University Student Handbook.

Exam and Test Policies

Exams and test attendance are mandatory and make up exams will only be given in extreme circumstances and must be approved prior to the exam.

Any violation of the MPGE Academic Integrity Policy will be reported to the University's Academic Integrity Office, and there will be a minimum grade penalty of a zero for the exam.

Description of Course Components

Weekly Participation

There will be several discussions throughout the semester, either on a discussion board or in a Live Session Via Zoom. Specific instructions for each discussion can be found in Canvas.

Homework Assignments

There will be several homework assignments throughout the semester, worth 25% of your grade. They will be due on the Sunday following their respective units, giving you the weekend to complete them. Homework assignments will require you to use design simulation packages/programs like ProMax or any other design program you may be using during your job responsibilities. Training material for ProMax will be made available in Canvas for your use.

Midterm and Final Exams

You will take a midterm and final exam. These will consist of T/F, multiple choice, and short answer questions as well as equations. Your exams will be proctored by Remote Proctoring (instructions provided in the exam modules), but note that the service costs $15 per exam ($30 total for our course).

Late Policy

No make-ups for missed exams. Only very special requests may be considered in advance on a case-by-case basis.

Academic Misconduct

Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the course work without doing the required paperwork your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course.
