Course Components
Homework
Homework is intended to be for your learning, practice, and assessment. Many of the problems represent intentionally challenging, real world problems. Continuous practice of concepts is necessary for long-term mastery of the subject. Homework in this class should be considered as the minimum required practice.
Working engineers and engineering students must practice problem formulation, problem solving, and solution documentation. Therefore, a proper solution format is required. Unless otherwise stated, homework assignments should be done by hand on engineering paper and include the following headings: Problem, Given, Sketch, Objective, and Solution. All details between statement of the problem and final solution should be clearly explained in order to effectively demonstrate your understanding of the process. Each page should include your name, the assignment due date, the problem set number, and page number at the top of the page. Clearly state any assumptions required, list any code references used, and document any help you received from a source outside of the course textbook, class notes, or professor. Insert this documentation in your solution at the point help was received.
The use of solutions during homework attempts is strongly discouraged. Relying on solutions from previous classes, the textbook, or the internet will result in poor performance during the exams. Nevertheless, if published solutions reveal errors, subsequent corrections require proper documentation.
Typical homework grading emphasizes effort, completeness, and timeliness. Each homework problem can earn up to 10 points (100%) with total points varying per assignment. The grade is composed of 70% credit for a complete, on-time homework attempt and 30% for self-assessment of the homework attempt. You will submit each problem twice:
- Initial Homework Attempt:
A Canvas submission of homework before the solution posts. Each problem will be evaluated based on timeliness, effort and completeness for up to 70%. A problem missing any sections, appropriate diagrams, or a good faith effort at the solution in the required homework format will receive no credit. Problems must be uploaded as PDF documents. Free document scanning apps available for smart phones include Genius Scan, Microsoft Lens, CamScanner, and Dropbox.
- Homework Self-Assessment:
A second Canvas submission of self-assessed homework after the solution posts. The remaining 30% for the assignment will be awarded for submitting a scanned or digital copy of the complete and self-assessed homework solution. I will provide a minimum of 36 hours for homework assessment. An incomplete hard-copy problem solution will receive no additional credit. Assessment should provide clear documentation of corrections made in a different color. A minimum of a check mark in a different color next to the correct answer is required.
Potential grades based on timely, complete homework dual submission are:

Late homework will be accepted for up to three days after the due date, but 10% will be deducted per day beginning at the time the assignment was due.
Quizzes
Quizzes will be administered outside of class using Canvas. Canvas quizzes will be included in modules within the canvas course. Check Canvas at the beginning of each for new quiz assignments. Quizzes will primarily cover content from the lectures.
Discussion
There will be approximately one discussion every other week throughout the semester. They will be administered through Canvas and moderated by the course TA. These discussions will be used to facilitate interaction between the students on a variety of topics. You will be graded primarily on participation.
Project
You will be required to work with a team (4-5 students) to design, build, and test a wood beam based on a set of constraints provided by the instructor. Modification to the project constraints may be needed depending on how the semester progresses.
Mid-term Exams
Two exams are planned. You will be allowed to use the following items on the exams:
Hand-written notes on four (4) sides of 8 ½” x 11” paper (no solved problems)
2015 NDS for Wood Construction
2015 NDS Supplement – Design Values for Wood Construction
2015 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS)
2015 ASD/LRFD Manual for Engineered Wood Construction
You may utilize an electronic version of the NDS. It is possible that a portion of the exams may not require a calculator. No make-up exams will be given without prior notification to the instructor or a valid doctor’s excuse.
Final Exam
The final exam will be comprehensive and given on Wednesday, December 16, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm in CEC 117. Topics included on the exam will be limited to those included in the course schedule.

The best way to contact me is through email as I typically split time between my office, Fears Structural Engineering Laboratory, and field research. I will respond within 24 hours during the week and will check my email at least once a day on the weekends.
Late Policy
Assignments turned in late will be considered late unless coordinated in advance or with a valid doctor’s excuse. Late homework will be accepted with a deduction of 10% per day and a maximum deduction of 50%. No late quizzes will be accepted and any missed exams must be scheduled before the exam.
Inclement Weather
Class will be canceled if the University is closed due to inclement weather. If the University is open, I will send an email as early as possible in the event class is cancelled.
UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA
ACADEMIC POLICIES AND STUDENT SUPPORT
Fall 2020 Masking Policy
As outlined by the University of Oklahoma¹s Chief COVID Officer, until further notice, employees, students, and visitors of the OU community will be mandated to wear masks (1.) when they are inside University facilities and vehicles and (2.) when they are outdoors on campus and social distancing of at least six feet is not possible. For the well-being of the entire university community it is important that everyone demonstrate the appropriate health and safety behaviors outlined in the University Mandatory Masking Policy (https://www.ou.edu/coronavirus/masking-policy). As this mandate includes all campus classrooms, please make sure you are wearing your mask while in class. If you do not have a mask or forgot yours, see the professor for available masks. If you have an exemption from the Mandatory Masking Policy, please see the professor to make accommodations before class begins. If and where possible, please make your professor aware of your exemption and/or accommodation prior to arriving in class.
If a student is unable or unwilling to wear a mask and has not made an accommodation request through the ADRC, they will be instructed to exit the classroom.
Attendance Policy
A temporary university policy has been established to protect the OU community by ensuring that students who are ill or required to isolate feel encouraged to remain at home. Missing a class session or other class activity due to illness or isolation will not result in a penalty for the absence, and the student will not be asked to provide formal documentation from a healthcare provider to excuse the absence. This policy is based on all students and faculty adhering to the principles of integrity, honesty, and concern for others.
Students who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, fever, shortness of breath, muscle pain, headache, chills, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea or who have been in close contact with others who have symptoms should:
- Remain at home to protect others
- Ensure that any needed screening has been conducted (COVID-19 Screening and Reporting Tool) and any needed treatment obtained
- Contact the instructor prior to absence or inability to participate, if possible, and provide an honest report of the reason for which you cannot attend class or complete a course activity
- Continue to complete coursework to the extent possible, using Canvas, zoom, and other online tools
- Submit assignments electronically to the extent possible and as directed by the instructor
- Communicate with the instructor to arrange modifications to deadlines or work requirements or reschedule exams or other important course activities, when it is necessary
Food and Drink in the Classroom
Food is not allowed classrooms. Students that may need to eat for health reasons, such as blood sugar regulation, should step outside the classroom to a social distanced location. Drinking in classes is generally discouraged. It is acceptable for students to take a sip from a water bottle or cup with a lid by temporarily moving their mask to do so and immediately replacing the mask. Discretion should be used while drinking in the classroom and temporary movement of a mask should be momentary and replaced after the sip.
Online Library
Students can use the University of Oklahoma library by visiting: http://libraries.ou.edu/
Academic Misconduct
In addition to the course conduct policies outlined by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook.
It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies, and procedures concerning academic misconduct. The Student Code is available from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and is contained in the Student's Guide to Academic Integrity, available at http://integrity.ou.edu/students_guide.html
This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.
Go to http://integrity.ou.edu/students_guide.html to learn more about the rules for avoiding plagiarism. Watch this video and then test your skills in avoiding plagiarism by taking this plagiarism tutorial and quiz.
Reasonable Accommodation for Disabilities
The University of Oklahoma is committed to providing reasonable accommodation for all students with disabilities. Students with disabilities who require accommodations in this course should contact their professor as early in the semester as possible.
Students with disabilities must be registered with the Disability Resource Center prior to receiving accommodations in this course.
If you have a disability and you would like to make a request for reasonable accommodation, please see the Graduate Student Handbook or visit the Disability Resource Center and other disability services at OU at: http://drc.ou.edu/
Adjustments for Pregnancy/Childbirth Related Issues
Should you need modifications or adjustments to your course requirements because of documented pregnancy-related or childbirth-related issues, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss your options. Generally, modifications will be made where medically necessary and similar in scope to accommodations based on temporary disability. Please see www.ou.edu/content/eoo/faqs/pregnancy-faqs.html for commonly asked questions.
Title IX Resources
For any concerns regarding gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, or intimate partner violence, the University offers a variety of resources, including advocates on-call 24.7, counseling services, mutual no contact orders, scheduling adjustments, and disciplinary sanctions against the perpetrator. Please contact the Sexual Misconduct Office 405-325-2215 (8-5, M-F) or OU Advocates 405-615-0013 (24/7) to learn more or to report an incident.
Religious Holidays
It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.
Copyright Policy
It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent. The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user’s access to some or all of the university’s computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.
Registration and Withdrawal
If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of Admissions and Records or online at http://www.ou.edu/admissions/home/academic_calendar.html
Student Grievances
In addition to any policies outlined related to submitting an informal or formal grievance by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook for more information about the process of submitting a formal grievance.
