CLASS STRUCTURE DURING COVID
Coursework has been modified to provide a safe environment for handling materials and tools in a shared workspace. Beginning the second week of the semester, half the class will meet Mondays and the other half on Wednesdays (Mon/A-L & Wed/M-Z ). In the studio students will receive one-on-one instruction with projects, while work days at home will consist of weekly screenings, readings, and assignments.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This foundation level course introduces students to principles of space and time within the realm of art and design. Students will explore the fundamentals of 3D design and construction while cultivating the capacity for visual analysis and critical thinking. Students will investigate the structural, compositional, and conceptual roles of basic materials, as well as the processes that transform their meaning over time. Students will develop creative and thoughtful solutions to a series of open-ended questions and conceptual prompts. The basic design concepts, processes, and strategies presented will serve as a foundation to pursue further art and design coursework.
OBJECTIVES
- Learn to develop unique and thoughtful solutions to open-ended prompts;
- Develop an understanding of visual elements and principles, such as balance, contrast, movement, proportion, scale, repetition, rhythm, pattern, and harmony;
- Understand the relationship between form and content;
- Explore traditional, alternative, and time‐based media;
- Develop conceptual and technical skills relevant to advanced level courses;
- Understand art from a variety of contemporary, historical, and cultural perspectives;
- Contribute to discussions around the subjective analysis and reading of an artwork;
- Explore how presentation influences the way a work is perceived;
- Develop healthy interpersonal skills in creative and social spaces
- Learn to listen to others while exploring and expressing ideas in a group setting
- Cultivate good work habits and self-discipline.
STRUCTURE
The structure of this course will move between hands-on making and group discussion. Thematic presentations and demonstrations provide the groundwork for the personal development of artworks, in theory and in practice. There is an expectation of at least 6 hours of hands-on work development of projects per week, in addition to scheduled class time.
– Thematic Presentations & Group Discussions accompany each project. We will look at artists, movements, and history to provide a context for each project.
– Material Demonstrations & Prompts will introduce students to basic material techniques, in the construction of three-dimensional forms and time-based works. Thematic prompts will encourage hands-on problem solving, experimentation, and critical thinking.
– Studio Work Days provide one-on-one technical and conceptual support while working in a creative and collaborative learning environment.
– Project Presentations will focus on the presentation, critical analysis, and reading of a work in a group setting.
EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to arrive to class on-time and ready to work. Outside of class, students should document, draw, write, collect visual reference, and develop a catalog of research materials to communicate their ideas. Final projects, in-class assignments, and presentations will be graded upon completion and will incrementally decrease in letter grade if a deadline is missed or not personally discussed with me. All assignments must be completed in order to pass this class.
SKETCHBOOK & MODELS: Drawing, writing, and model-making are essential for conducting research, developing ideas, as well as visualizing and constructing sculptural forms. These preparatory materials will provide a record of your creative process. Your ability to communicate your thoughts and intentions will be considered in part of your final evaluation.
GRADING
40% — Assignments
30% — Participation & Attendance
30% — Personal Growth & Development
A – Excellent performance. Exemplary work ethic, attitude, development, and grit.
B – Very good. Meets expectations and shows sufficient effort and growth.
C – Good. Demonstrates competence though inconsistent attention to quality and care.
D – Below standard. Lacks consistency across all dimensions of assessment.
F – Unacceptable. Fails to meet basic assessment required to pass.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Three absences will decrease your grade one letter, each additional will decrease your grade a half letter. Three latenesses (more than 10 minutes) will be the equivalent to one absence. Leaving class early constitutes a lateness, also. If you are ill it is expected that you will email me directly.
STUDIO SAFETY
Students are expected to be mindful of others materials, workspace and projects. You are responsible for cleaning up after yourself. This includes sweeping, vacuuming, putting away tools, and turning off the lights if you are the last to leave. Store your projects and materials either on a clear storage bin or shelf. Always wear closed-toed shoes, tie back long hair, and remove dangling jewelry when working in the studio, and with respect to power tools. The studio can be a messy environment, so dress appropriately.
