Course activities and grades listed for each activity

Activity	Description	Percentage
Attendance and Participation	Self explanatory. Students are expected to attend and participate in class. Students will get 2 points per day, one for attending and one for appropriately participating in class.	10%
Canvas Discussions	A discussion topic on each week's material will be opened every Wednesday and students must make a meaningful contribution to the discussion by the beginning of class on the following Friday.	10%
Group Blog project	In groups of three, students will create a literary criticism blog using the resources available at OU Create.	10%
Presentation	Each student will create a presentation highlighting their contribution to the group blog project.	10%
Quizzes	There will be at least five but no more than ten pop quizzes during the semester. Each will test whether you read the assigned reading material for that day.	10%
Mid-Term Evaluation	There will be a midterm exam covering the narrative and poetry sections on October 12, 2020.	25%
Final Exam	Date and time to be announced: will cover the drama and essay sections of the course.	25%

Course Policies

Communication

The course's primary communication methods will be email and Zoom. I will try to reply to all emails within 24 hours, but usually replies will be much quicker than that as I check messages throughout the day. In addition to our regular class meetings on Zoom, I will also be available for Zoom office hours on Mondays and Tuesdays between 1 and 2 PM. I will also be available for officer hours by appointment on Fridays during the afternoon.

Late Policy

No late work will be accepted except for work that is late due to an excused absence (illness, bereavement, university sponsored event, or religious holiday).

STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES

Spring 2021 Semester Spanish Minor in Puebla (January - May 2021)

Spend the spring 2021 semester in Puebla and complete your Spanish minor with SPAN 3073 (Grammar in Conversational Communication), SPAN 3423 (Grammar in Written Communication) and other Spanish courses. Other 3000- and 4000-level equivalent courses are offered and may include SPAN 3733 (Medical Spanish); SPAN 3753 (Spanish for Social Work); SPAN 4113 (Literature and Culture of Latin America); SPAN 4173 (Regional Literatures and Cultures); SPAN 4773 (Topics in Spanish Linguistics); SPAN 4913 (The Structure of the Spanish Language); and SPAN 4923 (Teaching of Spanish in the United States). Deadline: September 28, 2020.

Verano Poblano: May 17-June 11, 2021: 

Take advantage of the 2021 May intersession and continue your Spanish minor with OU faculty at OU's study center in Puebla, Mexico. Take SPAN 3073 (Grammar in Conversational Communication) and/or SPAN 3423 (Grammar in Written Communication). You may count these courses as part of your spring 2021 flat-rate tuition. The Cuisine, Arts and Culture of Mexico: June 14-July 8, 2021

Spend four weeks at OU's study center in Puebla, Mexico with OU faculty. Continue your Spanish minor or major with SPAN 3853 (Introduction to Hispanic Literature and Culture) as well as a course in Mexican Cuisine and Culture (SPAN / IAS 4970). Deadline: March 5, 2021.

Academic Misconduct

In addition to the course conduct policies outlined by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook. 

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies, and procedures concerning academic misconduct. The Student Code is available from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and is contained in the Student's Guide to Academic Integrity.

This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct.

Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Copyright Policy

It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent. The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user’s access to some or all of the university’s computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of the Registrar.
