Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to provide conceptual frameworks and practical tools for establishing sustainable and extensible data analytics capabilities within organizations.
We will cover five major topics:
- Dimensional modeling
- ETL practices
- Common data transformations
- Slowly changing dimensions
- Data management principles
Assumed Prior Knowledge
You should be familiar with fundamental database concepts including using SQL for data analysis and retrieval, JOINs, filtering data with WHERE, aggregations with GROUP BY, and the use of sub-queries.

Covers weekly reading material.
Initial Response (250 words or more); due at 11:59pm 4 days after Live Session
At least 2 additional replies to your peers or instructor (100 words or more); due by the next Live Session.
At least 3 "Likes" on classmates' posts or replies.
You must post your initial response before you will see your classmates' responses.
Lab Assignments
Technical activity to get familiar with modern data technology necessary to perform data warehousing. Due at 11:59pm the day before the Live Session.
Quizzes
Covers the previous lecture materials (including supplementary material) and assigned reading. Quizzes are open book with a 1 hour time limit. If you have not consumed the materials, you will not be successful on the quiz. Due at 11:59pm the day before the Live Session.
Group Project
Collaborate to put together and present an end-to-end dimensional modeling and data visualization project using an approved data source of your choosing. Presentations during last Live Session.

Late Policy
You are expected to actively participate in Live Sessions and deliver assignments on time.

Academic Misconduct

The University of Oklahoma has an Academic Misconduct Code that governs student academic performance in and out of the classroom. The Academic Misconduct Code can be reviewed online at http://www.ou.edu/integrity
Academic misconduct is defined as “any act that improperly affects the evaluation of a student’s academic performance or achievement”. All work assigned in this course is to be completed individually (unless otherwise stated). The steps and procedures as outlined in the Academic Misconduct Code will be followed in all cases of academic misconduct in this class.
MIS Division’s Guidelines provides the following guidelines for dealing with Academic Misconduct:
- All academic misconduct will be reported using the following form: http://www.ou.edu/content/dam/integrity/docs/academic-misconduct-report.pdf. Please read this form carefully so that you understand the potential penalties.
- The instructor will decide whether the misconduct is an Admonition or Violation of the Academic Integrity Code.
- When an instance of academic misconduct occurs on a homework or similar assignment and the instructor categorizes this as Admonition, a grade of zero will be recorded and deduction equal to the value of the assignment will be applied.
- When an instance of academic misconduct occurs on an exam assignment and the instructor categorizes this as Admonition, a grade of zero will be recorded.
- When an instance of academic misconduct occurs on an exam assignment and the instructor categorizes this as Violation of the Academic Integrity Code, no grade penalty shall be imposed until the student is officially found responsible for violating the Academic Integrity Code. Until this occurs, and “N” shall be filed as the student’s final course grade. If established, a violation results in a grade penalty and a University penalty.
- Faculty may choose to impose greater grade penalties than those recommended above by the MIS Division.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Religious Holidays
It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.
Copyright Policy
It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent. The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user’s access to some or all of the university’s computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.
Sessions of this course may be recorded or live-streamed. These recordings are the intellectual property of the individual faculty member and may not be shared or reproduced without the explicit, written consent of the faculty member. In addition, privacy rights of others such as students, guest lecturers, and providers of copyrighted material displayed in the recording may be of concern. Students may not share any course recordings with individuals not enrolled in the class or upload them to any other online environment.
Registration and Withdrawal
If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of the Registrar.
