Course Goal:  The primary goal of Gateway to College Learning is to assist in a successful transition from high school to university learning.  This is accomplished by investigation and practice of specific academic skills, by inquiry into life skills necessary for citizenship in any diverse community, and by knowledge of history, traditions, current campus life, and resources at the University of Oklahoma.

Accommodation Statement:  “Any student in this class who has a disability that may prevent full demonstration of ability should contact the instructor personally before the end of the first week of classes so that discussion can be held regarding accommodations necessary to ensure full participation and facilitate individual educational opportunities.”

Academic Integrity Expectations:

What does “academic integrity” mean? Academic integrity means honesty and responsibility in scholarship.  Professors have to obey rules of honest scholarship, and so do students.  Here are the basic assumptions about academic work at the University of Oklahoma;

    1. Students attend OU in order to learn and grow.
    2. Academic assignments exist for the sake of this goal.
    3. Grades exist to show how fully the goal is attained.
    4. Thus, all work and all grades should result from the student’s own effort to learn and grow.    Academic work completed any other way is pointless, and grades obtained any other way are fraudulent.
  • Academic integrity means understanding these basic rules, without which no university can exist. Academic misconduct (cheating) is not just “against the rules.” It destroys the mutual trust and respect that should exist between student and professor. Finally, it is unfair to students who earn their grades honestly.

The University subscribes to Turnitin.com, a program to check student papers for originality.

Course Expectations

Attendance in class is expected for all class periods. The course grade will be lowered by one letter grade after the third undocumented/unexcused absence and by one additional letter grade for each subsequent unexcused absence. Absences may be excused only by petition with appropriate documentation to the instructor within three weeks of the absence.  Students are expected to use the three undocumented absences for illness, injury, or family emergencies that do not have documentation.   Additionally, three tardies will count as one absence. Student attendance is posted in Canvas.

Reading assignments must be completed prior to the class period for which they are due. Class discussion is based on the readings, and each student is expected to make informed contributions to these discussions.

Reflection activities are opportunities for students to apply the course material to their own lives and experiences. The REI Writings and OU Compass Survey information that identifies an individual student will not be shared in public without the student’s permission. The This I Believe Essay will be an opportunity for students to more openly share information about themselves with their classmates. A detailed rubric will be provided for this assignment.

Usage of electronic devices is prohibited in class without prior approval of the instructor. This includes cell phone usage for texting, checking email, and/or using social media. iPad and laptop use will be permitted at the discretion of the instructor for class-related purpose only.

Grading Policy Gateway to College Learning is a letter–graded course on a 1000 point scale.  Attendance is a part of the grade. A letter grade penalty is assessed for each absence after the third absence.  This course is not graded on a curve.

A= 900-1000

B= 800-899

C= 700-799

D= 600-699

F= 0-599

Late assignments are not accepted.

You will receive a tentative day-to-day calendar for the semester during the first week of classes. The syllabus, course calendar, rubrics, and grades are also available on Ca
