Course Details

Students in this course will develop basic ability to design, build, and implement data pipeline systems to allow efficient access to data and databases. Several topics will be covered including data wrangling, data ingestion, and storage engines. Cloud based systems for data processing and distributed computing will also be discussed.

Course Expectations

You are expected to view all videos and complete all reading assignments. Also, you will be expected to participate in online discussions and attempt all Self-Check Quizzes.

Professional Behavior

While many of the tools necessary for the completion of this course will be discussed in the course content or via guided assignments, nevertheless considerable work outside of class in learning programming tools or researching analytical techniques is expected.

CS 1213 or CS 1313 or CS 1321 or CS 1323 or CS 1324 and DSA 3013

Course Materials

No textbook is required for this course.

The Canvas Course Management System will be used as the main mode of communication and information for this class, in that all announcements, notes, assignments and additional class resources can be found there. For fastest response, email should be sent directly to the instructor and not through Canvas email.

Scale

Coursework will consist of quizzes, homework, exams, and a semester project. I do not rely on Canvas for final grade calculations and neither should you. All grades are calculated off-line according to the structure defined below and traditional letter grade cut-offs (>=90% is A; >=80% is; B>=70% is C; >=60% is D; <60% is F)

Course Components

 Homework

There will be two homework assignments, each will be submitted in a similar format: 

1. The coding components are based on Python. You can submit the code as jupyter notebook but not required (.py file is also acceptable)

2. Comment your code! Not necessarily for every single line but comments should indicate what each section of codes does.

3. Submit your homework solution as a zip file containing the main description file and codes you used.

Project

There will be one project, which will ask you to submit in a similar fashion to the homework assignments:

Even though the project asks for a similar submission format as the homework, it will require more time and knowledge of coding. 

Final Exam

There is one final exam. All exams are set up in a similar fashion.

Communication

E-mail communication is the primary method with me in this course. I will respond to students’ e-mails within 48 hours or sooner. To ensure a prompt response, please put “DSA 3023” in your e-mail subject line as a prefix. For example, your subject line could be: DSA 3023: Question about Assignment.

Late Policy

Make-up homework, exams and quizzes will only be permitted for officially documented absences.  All documented absences due to religious observances and officially approved trips will be guaranteed a make-up opportunity.  Absences due to other unavoidable reasons (e.g., death in the family, illness) will be considered on a case-by-case basis, with appropriate documentation required.  Except in the case of an emergency, the student must always seek instructor consent prior to the absence.  If an emergency, you must contact the instructor as soon as feasibly possible. Make-up work will be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor and might occur before the scheduled absence.  Typically, make-up work will be scheduled as close to the original assignment date as possible.

Academic Misconduct

In addition to the course conduct policies outlined by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook. 

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies, and procedures concerning academic misconduct. The Student Code is available from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and is contained in the Student's Guide to Academic Integrity.

This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct.

Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Copyright Policy

It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent. The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user’s access to some or all of the university’s computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of the Registrar.
