Scale

Grades will be calculated based on the percentage of total points received divided by the total points possible for the course (90% is an A, 80% is a B, 70% is a C, 60% is a D, and below 60% is a failing score).

Components

Exams (40%) - Students will take two non-cumulative exams (10% each) and one cumulative final exam (20%). Exams may come in various formats, some examples of which include (but are not limited to) multiple-choice, short answers, essays, and problem-solving. Exams are taken in-person in the classroom using a computer that you provide. The exams are given using Respondus Lockdown Browser using a computer that you will bring to class on the day of the exam.

Quiz Questions (15%) - Quiz questions may be asked in a variety of ways. Sometimes, they may come at the beginning of the end of class. Other times, they may be interspersed throughout a given lecture. Quiz questions will frequently be asked using Top Hat, so please establish a top hat account (see bookstore requirements) for your use in this course. To be successful, it is important to read the material and pay attention to the lectures and discussions.   Quiz questions are scored entirely on correctness.

Participation Questions (15%) - Participation questions may be asked in a variety of ways. Sometimes, they may come at the beginning of the end of class. Other times, quiz and participation questions will be interspersed throughout a given lecture. Participation questions will frequently be asked using Top Hat, so please establish a top hat account (see bookstore requirements) for your use in this course.   Participation questions are scored 100% on participation (correctness doesn't matter).

Attendance and Professionalism (10%) - Arriving at class on time and staying for the entire class period is important (whether in-person or on Zoom). I will take attendance on Top Hat during the first few minutes of class. If you arrive late and miss the attendance, you will lose the attendance points for that day. You may attend the lectures in this course in person, remotely on live Zoom.

It is important that you practice professional behavior at all times. Some examples of professional behavior include:

  • Attend class and arrive on time (attendance is taken on Top Hat at the start of class.
  • Always have your name tent on the desk in front of you.  If you are on Zoom, please make sure that your name is displayed properly (first name last name) on your video.
  • Read the assigned materials ahead of the class.
  • If you are on Zoom, keep your camera on so that we can all interact together during class and keep your microphone muted unless you are speaking.
  • Interact with your professor and your colleagues during class
  • Respect the rights of your fellow students by not carrying on conversations (texting, etc.) that would distract, disturb or disrupt other students.

Homework (15%) - Homework will frequently be assigned at the end of the class period and will generally be due before the following class period.

End of Class Survey (5%) - Completing the "end of the class survey" at the end of every class (I will make this available to you on Top Hat at the end of each class)

Policies

Top Hat - Top Hat is an integral and essential part of this course. Having Top Hat working correctly is your responsibility, so please be proactive and immediately address any Top Hat issues with Top Hat Technical Support. You must be in a location (the classroom or otherwise) that has stable internet service. Without stable internet service, you will likely lose points because you will not answer quiz and participation questions. If you miss a quiz or participation for any reason other than an excused absence (illness, etc.), you will not be allowed to make up these points. However, there are many quiz and participation questions in the course, so missing a few due to technology issues should not have a meaningful impact on your grade.

Pandemic Policies -

  • Before/After Class - Please do not approach the podium before or after class. If you need to meet with me, please visit office hours or send me an email, and we can set up a time on zoom to meet.
  • Exams - if you are ill or in quarantine on exam days, you may ask to take the exam during the class period while on Zoom. In order to do this, you will need two devices. The first is a computer with Respondus Lockdown Browser installed, on which you will take the exam. The second is a device that you will run Zoom on (tablet, phone, etc.). During the exam, you will stream yourself taking the exam, so the camera must clearly frame you taking the exam, including your work area. If you are too ill to take an exam on exam day, you may request a make-up exam.
  • Content - If you are ill or in quarantine, don't attend class in person.  Rather, attend class on Zoom.  If you are too ill to attend on Zoom, please watch the recorded video of the session.  If you are too ill to attend class and you wish to have the points excused from a particular session, please ask me for an excused absence prior to class.
  • Masking - I will always wear a mask in class.  I do this to protect myself, and to protect you and those that you care about.  I ask that you also wear a mask in my classroom.  If you don't have one available, I will always have a box of masks at the front of the classroom -- please feel free to take one.

Grades - You may not:

  • Tell me that you need a certain grade.
  • Ask me for extra assignments for the purpose of raising your grade.
  • Ask me to raise your grade because it is very close to the next higher grade.
  • Ask me to raise your grade because you did very well on some portion of the course.
  • Ask me for a higher grade because you don't like the grading scheme.
  • Ask me to treat you differently than your classmates.
  • Ask me for any other unfair advantage in grading.

Course Schedule - The course schedule is a guide to your class preparation. It is an estimation of where we will be as the semester progresses, but it is NOT a binding contract. In addition to the assigned reading, additional assignments (quizzes, etc.) may be made in class. Any modifications to the schedule or syllabus will be announced in class. It is your responsibility to be aware of any changes.

Academic Misconduct

In addition to the course conduct policies outlined by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook.

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies, and procedures concerning academic misconduct. The Student Code is available from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and is contained in the Student's Guide to Academic Integrity.

This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

For more information about plagiarism, watch this video and then take this short course offered by University Libraries.

Reasonable Accommodation for Disabilities

The University of Oklahoma is committed to providing reasonable accommodation for all students with disabilities. Students with disabilities who require accommodations in this course should contact their professor as early in the semester as possible.

Students with disabilities must be registered with the Disability Resource Center prior to receiving accommodations in this course.

If you have a disability and you would like to make a request for reasonable accommodation, please see the Graduate Student Handbook or get in touch with the Accessibility and Disability Resource Center.

Adjustments for Pregnancy/Childbirth Related Issues

Should you need modifications or adjustments to your course requirements because of documented pregnancy-related or childbirth-related issues, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss your options. Generally, modifications will be made where medically necessary and similar in scope to accommodations based on temporary disability. Learn more about the rights of pregnant and parenting students by consulting the FAQ sheets provided by the Institutional Equity Office.

Title IX Resources

For any concerns regarding gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, or intimate partner violence, the University offers a variety of resources, including advocates on-call 24/7, counseling services, mutual no-contact orders, scheduling adjustments, and disciplinary sanctions against the perpetrator. Please contact the Sexual Misconduct Office at 405-325-2215 (8-5, M-F) or OU Advocates at 405-615-0013 (24/7) to learn more or to report an incident.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Copyright Policy

It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent. The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user's access to some or all of the university's computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of the Registrar.

Student Grievances

In addition to any policies outlined related to submitting an informal or formal grievance by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook for more information about the process of submitting a formal grievance.

Attendance Policy

A (temporary) university policy has been established to protect the OU community by ensuring that students who are ill or required to isolate feel encouraged to remain at home. Missing a class session or other class activity due to illness or isolation will not result in a penalty for the absence, and the student will not be asked to provide formal documentation from a healthcare provider to excuse the absence. This policy is based on all students and faculty adhering to the principles of integrity, honesty, and concern for others.

Students who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, fever, shortness of breath, muscle pain, headache, chills, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea or who have been in close contact with others who have symptoms should:

  • Remain at home to protect others
  • Ensure that any needed screening has been conducted (COVID-19 Screening and Reporting Tool) and any needed treatment obtained
  • Contact the instructor prior to absence or inability to participate, if possible, and provide an honest report of the reason for which you cannot attend class or complete a course activity
  • Continue to complete coursework to the extent possible, using Canvas, zoom, and other online tools
  • Submit assignments electronically to the extent possible and as directed by the instructor
  • Communicate with the instructor to arrange modifications to deadlines or work requirements or reschedule exams or other important course activities, when it is necessary
