Course Description
The purpose of this course is to learn about the various facets of leadership in the construction industry, and to explore leadership in the context of the role of construction manager.
Course Goals
The goals of this course are to acquaint students with the concepts of leadership in construction management and to work in teams with their classmates. Additionally, this course serves as an opportunity to better understand one’s strengths and talents, as well as engaging and interacting with others, within the construction industry.
Learning Objectives
No one becomes a leader simply by taking one course. It takes knowledge and years of experience. The expectation is that each student completes this course with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of leadership. At the conclusion of this course, the student is expected to:
1. Understand how one can personally impact their leadership style;
2. Understand leadership skills, traits, and styles;
3. Understand how to work with and integrate with others as well as develop others around them; and
4. Develop a personalized leadership and management philosophy.

No text is required. Reading assignments will be assigned each week.
Personality Assessments
In lieu of required text(s), each student will complete two assigned personality assessments:
1) You are required to complete the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Please go to the website using the following link: https://assessment.mbtionline.com/Registration. You will complete the assessment and upload your results to Canvas by 6:00P on 18Jan22.
2) You are required to complete the CliftonStrengths for Students. Please go to the website using the following link: https://store.gallup.com/p/en-us/10265/cliftonstrengths-for-students-top-5. You will complete the assessment and upload your results to Canvas by 6:00P on 18Jan22.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that a discussion format is the most effective way to learn. As such, students should be prepared to ask questions as well as present opinions and engage with one another and the instructor.
Expectations
Our time in class is valuable, and active participation is essential. Due to the nature of the online meetings, this active engagement and participation is especially important. Working on other things during the class meeting is STRONGLY discouraged as it inhibits the ability to engage with the group. Treat the time as if it were in person. Anything that creates a distraction (other work, texting, emailing, improper use of the chat feature, visual and audio background distractions, etc.) in the group is prohibited. Students are expected to:
- Join on time with required materials and adequately prepared
- Be prepared with the required devices and software to connect to the class meeting
- Be prepared to engage in class discussions and ask questions
- Respect the rights of other classmates and refrain from anything that demeans, distracts, or disturbs others
Communication
The primary form of communication and platform for dissemination of information for this course is Canvas (canvas.ou.edu). Students are responsible for checking the course page regularly. Assignments, changes to the course schedule, and other relevant information will be posted to this page and this will be the primary means for communicating this type of information. It is also imperative that each student verify that the email address that they check regularly is linked to the email for that student in Canvas.
There may be periodic and unannounced quizzes or other material/assignments to complete throughout the semester.
Class Participation
Each student will be graded on professionalism and contribution to the class. Attending class, joining on time, turning in papers and presentations on time, not being distracted by technology, not doing homework in class, and not distracting from the learning environment is the class expectation and norm. To receive a higher participation grade (A or B), students must take part in and contribute to the discussions regarding the subject topics.
Grading
Grading of writing assignments and presentations will be based on clarity of thought AND delivery, format, completeness, correctness, and professionalism. It is the student’s responsibility to convey the concept(s) in a manner that it can be properly graded. The solution should be understandable in and of itself and not require explanation. As eluded to above, professionalism is an entirely subjective grade given by the instructor to reward those who actively participate in class and consistently conduct themselves and complete their work in a timely and professional manner. Grade appeals must be made within two calendar days from when the assignment is returned.

Scale
A > 90%; B > 80 - 89%; C > 70 - 79%; D > 60 - 69%; F < 59%
The instructor will round to 2 decimal places, so a 79.44 would result in a grade of C, while a 79.45 would result in a grad of B.

Course Policies
Attendance/Absences
Leadership cannot happen in a vacuum. Further, punctuality, class attendance, participation and preparation are explicit reflections of your interest in the course. You will be penalized ten (10) percentage points from your FINAL AVERAGE for each unexcused absence beyond two (2) unexcused absences. In the case of an absence (excused or unexcused) it is the student's responsibility to obtain notes, supplemental material, and anything else from fellow classmates.
Late / Make-up Policy
There will be no make-up assignments unless due to any of the Provost approved activities or legally required activities. Notify the instructor 48 hours prior to any Provost approved activity or legally required activity.
Course Presentations, Writing Assignments, and Evaluation
Assignments are due on the specified due date at the specified time and will need to be turned in on time for consideration for full credit. Work turned in late will automatically be assessed a 10% penalty. Additional points will be deducted from the final grade determined by the duration until submitted.
Unless otherwise indicated (as in the group presentations), students are to complete the course requirements as individuals. Any indication that students are doing otherwise will result in the maximum ramifications as allowed by university policy.
In the case of group assignments, all members are expected to contribute to their best potential. A group presentation evaluation form will be uploaded by every student immediately following each group presentation and will be used to evaluate each members’ participation in each presentation.
Respect
All students are expected to follow appropriate etiquette and behavior in the discussions. Specifically, disrespectful behavior to other students or the instructor will not be allowed. If the instructor deems a student’s behavior to be disruptive or inappropriate the student will be removed from the discussion for that class.

Academic Misconduct
In addition to the course conduct policies outlined by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook.
It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies, and procedures concerning academic misconduct. The Student Code is available from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and is contained in the Student's Guide to Academic Integrity.
This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Religious Holidays
It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Copyright Policy
It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent. The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user’s access to some or all of the university’s computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.
Registration and Withdrawal
If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of the Registrar.
