Course Components

Live Sessions

Each week we will have a Live Session via Zoom. Live Sessions will be held every Tuesday from 5:30–6:00 pm (CDT). This will give us an opportunity to interact face-to-face in real time. You will enter the Live Session meeting by clicking on the Zoom icon in the Live Session page of each module. 

Participation

Students are expected to participate in Live Sessions. If you cannot attend the Live Session, contact me to make other arrangements.

Assignments

All assignments will use Canvas submission folder. No late assignments will be accepted. Do not email assignment to instructor - late assignments emailed to instructor will not be accepted.

This research report examines a transportation relevant topic of interest to the student and involves the application of statistical analysis, synthesis, and interpretation. Once the topic is agreed upon, the student will start with a literature review, which should include refereed journal articles, conference proceedings, trade journals, trade magazines, and any other sources of reputable information. The student will then formulate a summary of this source material in the form of a complete bibliography. After completing the summary, the student will write the research report with assistance as needed from the instructors.

Topics

Select a topic related to transportation statistics, i.e., infrastructure – highways, bridges, and vehicles; public transit; aviation; passenger rail; freight railroads; or port and waterway infrastructure. However, I am not opposed to a topic outside of these areas if I determine that it will contribute to your MS degree and career aspirations if it relates to application of statistical methods.

Communication Plan

Please post your questions about the technical content of the course on the Course Help Board in each module. These questions may be of general interest to the entire class. If you are not comfortable posting your questions there, you may email your question directly to the me. I will generally respond to discussion board or email questions within 24 hours M-F, but on weekends there may be more of a delay depending on our availability. For Canvas issues please refer to the contact information on the course web page.

Late Policy

Late assignments and projects will NOT be accepted unless a properly documented and compelling medical or military excuse is presented. Arrangements may be made to hand an assignment in late if the instructor is notified in advance and the reasons are compelling. The instructor reserves the right to judge whether an excuse or reason for late assignments is compelling.

Only Provost-approved University-Sponsored activities are covered by these guidelines for exams and quizzes. There are no make-ups for missed exams or quizzes. Students who miss an exam or quiz due to illness or for any non-University sanctioned reason (but with approved documentation) will not be administered a make-up exam. In lieu of a make-up exam, the percentage score of the comprehensive final exam will be substituted for the score of the missed exam. For example, a student scoring 80 out of the 100 possible points on the final exam (80%) will be award a score of 40 points out of the 50 points for a missed mid-term exam. For all University-Sponsored activities, and given a three weeks advanced notice every effort to find a reasonable accommodation by (a) giving an early exam, or quiz; (b) changing the exam schedule; or (c) dropping the exam or quiz and increasing the weight of another exam or quiz. Students missing an exam on account of jury duty must be allowed an accommodation by OU policy. Students missing class due to illness must be supported by a certified note of illness. Student's missing any quiz or exam for other reasons not specified herein, will be subject to a failing grade for that quiz or exam.

Academic Misconduct

Students are required to abide by the policies set forth in the Student Code (see http://integrity.ou.edu). Students, who cheat on an exam, or copy homework without working the problems themselves, will receive a grade of zero for that piece of work and will be reported to the OU Integrity Council, for possible further action. While we encourage you to work together and help each other, you must turn in your own work, showing your own thoughts and your own processes. Simply asking someone to look at their work is not considered “working together.” Please do not show anyone your work, let anyone copy your work or share electronic files of assignments with each other. Feel free to talk through the possible solutions, but make sure you do your own work.

Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Reasonable Accommodation for Disabilities

Title IX Resources  

For any concerns regarding gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, or intimate partner violence, the University offers a variety of resources, including advocates on-call 24/7, counseling services, mutual no contact orders, scheduling adjustments, and disciplinary sanctions against the perpetrator. Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Copyright Policy

It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent. The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user’s access to some or all of the university’s computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of the Registrar.
