Course Description

This course is intended to produce a fundamental basis for further courses in mechanics, analysis, and design. The goal of the course is that the student will be able to apply the equations of equilibrium to analyze forces on rigid bodies. The following topics are included: vector representations of forces and moments; general three-dimensional theorems of statics; centroids and moments of area and inertia; free-body diagrams; equilibrium of a particle and of rigid bodies; distributed loads; friction; internal shear and moment loads; analyses of trusses, frames, beams, and machines.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Represent forces and moments using vectors.
  • Draw free body diagrams for rigid bodies in equilibrium.
  • Calculate external reactions for rigid bodies in equilibrium.
  • Analyze a truss.
  • Analyze a pin-connected frame structure.
  • Determine internal forces in frames and beams.
  • Draw shear and bending moment diagrams for beams.
  • Locate the centroid of an area.
  • Calculate area moment of inertia.
  • Calculate forces associated with static dry friction.  

Lectures

Much of the lectures will be devoted to solving problems related to the sections listed on the course schedule. It is very important to review these sections before class, as your active participation will greatly enhance your learning experience. Interactive questions and attendance quizzes will be conducted on paper or using Canvas. Please bring your calculator, mobile device/tablet/laptop capable of accessing Canvas, and note-taking material to each class. Attendance of the lectures is imperative, you will be responsible for any material covered in class even if absent for authorized reasons.

Expectations

The relative weight distribution between the graded components of the course are specified above. Note that your grades on the exams and the final reflect your comprehension of the material from the course. The homework reflects not only your comprehension but also your ability to complete work on time. Effort, though necessary for doing well in the course, is not sufficient to guarantee a good grade. Your grade is based on your demonstrated comprehension of the course material and your ability to complete assignments on time.

Learning Assessment and Course Policies

  • ABET Learning Outcomes: At the successful completion of CEES 2113 you will be able to (1) apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering; (2) identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
  • Homework: Homework will typically be assigned on Wednesday and be due by the beginning of class (10:30 am) the following Wednesday. Late Homework will not be accepted without a valid excuse approved by the instructor. See the course website for assignments and their specific due dates/times. Unless otherwise stated, assignments should be done by hand on engineering paper and include the following headings: Problem, Given, Sketch, Objective, and Solution. All details between statement of the problem and the final solution should be clearly explained to effectively demonstrate your understanding of the concepts. Clearly state any assumptions and theoretical concepts required. Each page header should include your name, the assignment due date, the problems number, and page number at the top of the page. A portion of your homework score will be based on whether your homework solutions are presented in a professional manner (on engineering paper, neat, and follows the homework outline distributed in class).

Homework will be graded out of 10 points, with 2/3 of the grade based on completion (completion score), and 1/3 of the grade based on accuracy (numerical accuracy score).

 

Grade Examples:

 

Example 1: You attempt all problems in a professional manner and submit your complete PDF showing your work but all the numerical answers are wrong!

 

            Final Score = (2/3) × 10 + (1/3) × 0  = 6.67 (out of 10)

 

Example 2: You attempt all problems in a professional manner and submit a complete PDF showing your work, and half of your numerical answers are correct.

 

            Final Score = (2/3) × 10 + (1/3) × 5 = 8.33 (out of 10)

 

Example 3: You submit a PDF only showing correct numerical answers but no work. (Please don’t do this!)

           

            Final Score = 0

 

Example 4: You attempt 8 of 10 in a professional manner and submit a complete PDF showing your work for those 8 problems, and you have the correct numerical answer for each problem.

 

            Final Score = (2/3) × 8 + (1/3) × 8 = 8 (out of 10)

 

Important note:

All homework scores will be scaled to 10 points when the score is calculated, unless otherwise indicated on an assigned homework.

 

Please confer with the TA first concerning any disagreement on homework grades. If the dispute cannot be settled by the TA, confer with the instructor during office hours. The lowest scoring assignment throughout the course of the semester will be dropped when calculating final grades.

  • In-class assignments/quizzes: You will be given in-class assignments approximately every other week, which will be collected. The assignment/quiz will be related to the material covered in the class the previous two weeks. While there will be no make-up assignment/quiz for an excused absence, I will automatically drop your lowest in-class assignment/quiz grade. Any additional excused absences will require a meeting with the instructor.
  • Midterm exams: There will be three (3) midterm exams. The exams will be closed book, closed note. Students will be informed before the exam as to what information will be provided on a formula sheet. No make-up exams will be given without prior notification to the instructor or a valid doctor’s excuse. Each student should have his/her valid University of Oklahoma I.D. available for checking at each exam.
  • Final exam: The final exam will be comprehensive and given on Wednesday December 13 from 8 am – 10 am in CEC 117. Topics included on the exam will be limited to those included in the course schedule.

Academic Misconduct

In addition to the course conduct policies outlined by your professor in the Course Syllabus in the online classroom, please review the Graduate Student Handbook. 

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies, and procedures concerning academic misconduct. The Student Code is available from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and is contained in the Student's Guide to Academic Integrity.

This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct.

Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of examinations and additional required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Copyright Policy

It is illegal to download, upload, reproduce, or distribute any copyrighted material, in any form and in any fashion, without permission from the copyright holder or his/her authorized agent. The University of Oklahoma expects all members of its community to comply fully with federal copyright laws. If such laws appear to have been violated by any user, the university reserves the right (1) to terminate that user’s access to some or all of the university’s computer systems and information resources and (2) to take additional disciplinary actions as deemed necessary or appropriate. Repeat offenders will be sanctioned and their privileges terminated.

Registration and Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Deadlines are shown in the Academic Calendar, which is available from the Office of the Registrar.
