- Designed for Digital: How to Architect Your Business for Sustained Success by Jeanne W. Ross, Cynthia M. Beath, and Martin Mocker. MIT Press, 2021.
- This book is available for purchase through the OU Bookstore.
- There are also cases and other readings. These will be available to you in the course, with the exception of three cases you will need to purchase from the Harvard Business Review Site.
Software
We will be using technology in this class to manage, visualize, and analyze data. The following software will be used:
- Tableau
- SAP

Course Components
Participation
In order to get the most out of this course, it is important for you to actively engage with the course materials, your peers, and me. As you read the assigned materials and watch the pre-recorded lectures, please take notes. You'll have a chance to submit questions and comments on an optional discussion board before each Live Session. I'll choose a few of your questions and address them when we meet in real-time during our Live Session. You can also earn participation points by joining these Live Sessions. If, for some reason, your schedule or other commitment prevents you from joining in real time, don't despair. You'll have a chance to earn participation points by watching a recording of the Live Session and submitting a 'make-up' activity.
Quizzes
The quizzes are multiple-choice quizzes that will be administered through our course website. They are open book and designed to incentivize becoming familiar with the reading material as we move through the class. The quizzes are posted at least one week prior to the quiz due date and you must submit the quiz before our Live Session on the day the quiz is due. You will have two attempts at each quiz, and your highest grade will be kept.
Lab Assignments
Every manager must have the skills and knowledge to perform simple business functions, manipulate data, and develop insight for making decisions. Three homework assignments offer an opportunity to sharpen your skills and competencies in using information technology to address business questions, make good decisions, and understand integrated business processes. The hands-on technology projects include:
- Data analytics (Tableau): Using data for decision support in healthcare.
- Using enterprise system applications (SAP): Using SAP to support the order-to-cash process, materials management, and financial accounting.
Having a chance to gain hands-on experience is the most effective way of learning how to use systems to support decision-making and business processes. If you choose to do so, you can work with a buddy on these hands-on assignments in Excel, Tableau, and SAP; yet submit your assignments individually. Each assignment has a detailed step-by-step set of instructions which will be invaluable to doing the project
Case Study Presentations
Our class will be divided into small groups. Each group will complete one group case study presentation. The specific questions to be answered in preparing the presentation will be provided by the instructor. The presentations will be given via pre-recorded videos that will be posted on course discussion boards. Groups that were not assigned to do a video presentation that week will respond to the videos that were shared. Then, in the Live Session, we will summarize the online discussion and highlight some key takeaways.
Group Project on Disruptive Technology
Using the groups you formed for case reports, you will also complete a group project on a disruptive technology. The project will contain a Zoom presentation of their group's analysis. During our final Live Session(s), the groups will be required to present their projects to the class in real-time.
Reflective Memo
Each individual will have an opportunity to write a memo summarizing recommendations for digital transformation for a real case study.
Course Policies
Communication
The best way to get a hold of me is through email. I will generally respond within 24 hours M-F. I will try to respond as quickly as possible during the weekends but it may not be until the tail-end of the weekend before you receive a response. I am open for appointments to discuss issues via Zoom. Please contact me about setting up Zoom appointments if needed.

I will do my best to respond to you within 24 hours, but it may take me longer over the weekend.
Late Policy
I will accept late case write-ups and lab homework but there will be a 10% deduction. Contact me as soon as possible in the event that you experience extenuating circumstances that will affect your ability to turn assignments in on time.
Incomplete Grade
A grade of I (for incomplete) will not be given under normal circumstances. Not performing well in class, not being able to complete an assignment in time, or being out of town during a test are inadequate reasons for requesting or granting an incomplete. Only circumstances beyond your control (such as a severe illness), which will need to be documented, may warrant a grade of I.
