Course Components

Participation

  • Live Sessions—There are points for being present at the live sessions and for participating in the discussions. If you are unable to attend a live session, to earn the points, please view the recording of the session and provide a short write-up (in bullet form not exceeding 50 words) on what you think were the main take-aways from that session. Your write-up is due by the end of the week for which you missed the session.

Case

Cases simulate business decisions, which will allow you to gain some expertise in the managerial use of accounting information. The course case entails analysis and a write-up. Please see the questions for the case, located in Module 8, for more details.

Note: You are strongly encouraged to start working on the case assignment at the earliest opportunity and not wait til Week 8. By the end of Week 5, we would have covered all materials for you to do the assignment.

The case is due by the end of Week 8 and will be submitted through Canvas.

The ground rules for the case write-up is:

  • Maximum of 5 pages
  • All exhibits or tables must be explained within the 5 pages
  • What you choose to write about is almost as important as what you say about it
  • Formatting specifications include:
    • very briefly describe the purpose of the case
    • state the question you are addressing
    • add in the corresponding analyses
    • present a specific recommendation with your reasons, if required (do not waste space repeating case facts).
  • Submit through Canvas

Quizzes

Quizzes are administered each week in the module (except the last week). The purpose of each quiz is to assess how well you have understood and can apply the key concepts from the materials covered each week.

The questions will be multiple choice encompassing short problems and theory. You are provided with a practice quiz to help you assess your understanding of the week’s materials before you take the graded quiz. Please take the practice quiz only when you are comfortable with the week’s materialThe graded quizzes are time-sensitive, and the duration of each quiz will vary. Once you access a quiz, it will automatically close after the duration set for that quiz expires.

Budgeting Project

This is an individual assignment consisting of problem 45 from Chapter 9 (10th edition). This problem will help you understand how to prepare sub-budgets and a comprehensive master budget.

The project is due by the end of Week 8 and will be submitted through Canvas.

Final Exam

There is one comprehensive exam at the end of the module. The duration of this exam is about 3 hours and consists of 13 multiple-choice questions and 1 long-answer, multi-part question.

To help you prepare for the final exam, there is a practice exam (9 multiple-choice questions, 1.5 hours). The nature and type of the questions in the practice exam are reflective of the questions in the final exam.

You may refer to your book and notes for the exam but be cognizant of the time-sensitive nature of the exam.

Bonus Assignment

The purpose of this individual, optional assignment is to provide your thoughts on an actual company’s cost management initiatives.

Note 1: The company can either be selected from publicly available information or the company you are or were working for.

Note 2: You are strongly encouraged to start working on the bonus assignment at the earliest opportunity and not wait till week 8. By the end of week 4, we would have covered enough materials for you to do the assignment.

The project is due by the end of Week 8 and will be submitted through Canvas.

Course Policies

Communication

Course Instructor Communication

Email is always the best way to reach me because ONLY your emails come to my Canvas account. Of course, you are always welcome to email me at dghosh@ou.edu

You should receive a response within 24 hours (not including weekends and holidays). If 48 hours or more have passed without a response, a follow-up email may be sent. Any urgent questions or concerns that require more immediate attention should be flagged as such in the subject line (simply write "urgent"). Emails will not be sent to personal email addresses. It is essential that you communicate with your OU email.

Course TA Communication and Virtual Office Hours

Mr. Andrew Zilles will be assisting me with this course. Should you need to meet with him, please contact him directly at andrew.zilles@ou.edu. The course TA will host two, one-hour, virtual office hour sessions each week. Please email questions you would like to discuss to the TA at least 24 hours in advance. The list of questions will be emailed to the all sections of ACCT 5212 before each respective live session to help you determine if you need to attend. In the event too many questions are submitted, questions will be addressed on a first-submitted/first-answered basis. You are welcome to attend either weekly session, regardless of which ACCT 5212 section you are enrolled.

Important: Please email either the instructor or the course TA, but not both. This will help ensure your question is addressed directly and most efficiently.

Late Policy

All assignments are due by midnight Central Time on the date listed. Late assignments will receive 0 points.  Deviations from this requirement on any one of the assignments must be coordinated with your Instructor in advance for approval.

Exceptions will be made only for documented, Provost-approved University-sponsored activities or legally required activities such as emergency military service, jury duty, or documented serious illness or emergency and then only after discussing it with your Instructor first.

Email your Instructor if an emergency occurs. If a student has not completed at least half of the required assignments, a final grade of AW (Administrative Withdrawal) will be assigned with no grade or credit.

University Academic Policies and Student Support

Land Acknowledgement

Long before the University of Oklahoma was established, the land on which the University now resides was the traditional home of the “Hasinais” Caddo Nation and “Kirikirʔi:s” Wichita & Affiliated Tribes.

We acknowledge this territory once also served as a hunting ground, trade exchange point, and migration route for the Apache, Comanche, Kiowa and Osage nations. Today, 39 tribal nations dwell in the state of Oklahoma as a result of settler and colonial policies that were designed to assimilate Native people.

The University of Oklahoma recognizes the historical connection our university has with its indigenous community. We acknowledge, honor and respect the diverse Indigenous peoples connected to this land. We fully recognize, support and advocate for the sovereign rights of all of Oklahoma’s 39 tribal nations. This acknowledgment is aligned with our university’s core value of creating a diverse and inclusive community. It is an institutional responsibility to recognize and acknowledge the people, culture and history that make up our entire OU Community.

Required Policies for Students On Campus

Emergency Protocol

During an emergency, there are official university procedures that will maximize your safety.

Severe Weather: If you receive an OU Alert to seek refuge or hear a tornado siren that signals severe weather:

  1. Look for severe weather refuge location maps located inside most OU buildings near the entrances
  2. Seek refuge inside a building. Do not leave one building to seek shelter in another building that you deem safer. If outside, get into the nearest building.
  3. Go to the building’s severe weather refuge location. If you do not know where that is, go to the lowest level possible and seek refuge in the innermost room. Avoid outside doors and windows.
  4. Get in, Get Down, Cover Up.
  5. Wait for official notice to resume normal activities.

Additional information about severe weather preparedness is available through the Department of Campus Safety's Emergency Management Division.

Armed Subject/Campus Intruder

If you receive an OU Alert to shelter-in-place due to an active shooter or armed intruder situation or you hear what you perceive to be gunshots:

  1. Avoid: If you believe you can get out of the area without encountering the armed individual, move quickly towards the nearest building exit, move away from the building, and call 911.
  2. Deny: If you cannot flee, move to an area that can be locked or barricaded, turn off lights, silence devices, spread out, and formulate a plan of attack if the shooter enters the room.
  3. Defend: As a last resort fight to defend yourself. For more information, visit:
