Instructions
Advanced Electronics Asia, Inc. is a manufacturer of electronic components and devices. Considered as a leading multinational firm in electronics industry, it is well known for producing a wide range of high-quality components, from semiconductors and integrated circuits to OLED panels. It is also known for producing electronic gadgets, from smartphones and tablets to laptop computers.
Research and Development
AEA invests heavily in research and development, with R&D offices in a few countries in Asia and Europe. Rather than being focused on cutting-edge innovations, however, AEA’s new product development is mostly focused on imitation. Their OLED panels, for example, were mostly based on existing Samsung’s products.
New Product Development
AEA’s R&D offices are currently thinking about developing a new product based on the existing mixed-reality headset devices, like Apple Vision Pro. Under a joint collaboration, one of their R&D offices in Asia and their European office are tasked to develop a protype by the end of June 2024. Their prototype must have a few innovative features, but the basic design follows the existing products in the market.
Challenges
Their new product is expected to be launched by December 2025. The decision-makers at AEA are concerned with a few challenges:
- They are concerned with how crowded the market is going to be by the time that they launch their new product.
- They are also concerned with relatively high R&D cost (currently estimated to be more than $100 million for the first year) and the return on their investments. Given their history of focusing on imitation, they always face a significant risk of intellectual property disputes. Navigating patents and copyrights to avoid litigation while innovating could be a major challenge.
- The electronic products are highly saturated. AEA will need to identify and effectively communicate unique value propositions of their product to stand out.
Question
Who are the major producers of mixed-reality headset devices in the world? Provide important examples of the existing products. Are these products produced under a perfectly competitive market structure? Finally, based on your answers to the previous questions, what would be the best strategy for AEA to enter this market, while avoiding the risk of intellectual property right litigations and securing a handsome return on their investment?
