Course Prerequisites
CEES 3413 Structural Analysis I or equivalent. Specifically, the ability to draw shear and bending moment diagrams for beams, analyze simple trusses, and calculate deflection are the most important skills required for the course. The ability to calculate stress and strain for axially loaded members, flexure, and shear is also important for this course.

- National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction – 2018 Wood Design Package (The 2024 version is available online, but not print and course videos are based on the 2018 Edition)

- NDS Supplement – Design Values for Wood Construction, 2018 Edition
- Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS), 2015 Edition (2021 is okay too)
- ASD/LRFD Manual for Engineered Wood Construction, 2018 Edition (Free Online)
- The NDS and SDPWS can be purchased from the American Wood Council (AWC) at a significant discount for use in this course. You will need to use a student discount code at checkout. Course Components
Homework
Five homework assignments will be given each intended to assess specific course objectives. These assignments will typically be due at 11:59 on Sunday evenings. Unless otherwise stated, homework assignments should be done by hand on engineering paper and include the following headings: Problem, Given, Sketch, Objective, and Solution. All details between statement of the problem and final solution should be clearly explained in order to effectively demonstrate your understanding of the process. Clearly state any assumptions required and list any code references used. Each page should include your name, the assignment due date, the problem set number, and page number at the top of the page. Homework assignments should be scanned and uploaded to Canvas before the due date for the assignment.
Quizzes
Ten quizzes, approximately one per week during the course, will cover the assigned readings and lecture videos and will be administered through Canvas. The quizzes will assess individual learning objectives.
Discussion
There will be approximately one discussion every other week throughout the semester. They will be administered through Canvas and moderated by the course TA. These discussions will be used to facilitate interaction between the students on a variety of topics. You will be graded primarily on participation.
Live Sessions
One live session per week will be used primarily for question and answer or more in-depth discussion of a topic distributed beforehand. Your active participation during live sessions is expected. If you are not able to make it to the session, a make-up assignment will be available to earn the participation credit. It will often be beneficial to have your NDS handy during the live sessions to mark any references.
Mid-term Exam
The mid-term exam will be used to assess course objectives on topics covered before the exam date. You will be allowed to use the following items on the mid-term exam:
- 2018 NDS for Wood Construction
- 2018 NDS Supplement – Design Values for Wood Construction
- 2015 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS)
- 2018 ASD/LRFD Manual for Engineered Wood Construction
You may utilize an electronic version of the NDS. It is possible that a portion of the exam may not require a calculator. You will complete the exam on paper and submit a scanned copy on Canvas.
Final Exam
The final exam will be comprehensive and is intended to assess the course objectives. It must be administered during the last week of the semester. Topics included on the exam will be limited to those included in the course schedule. You are allowed the same resources as for the mid-term exam. You will complete the exam on paper and submit a scanned copy on Canvas.
Course Policies
Communication Plan
The best way to contact me is through email as I typically split time between my office, Fears Structural Engineering Laboratory, and field research during the summer months. I will respond within 24 hours during the week and will check my email at least once a day on the weekends. There are two weeks during the summer when I will be out of the office and will have an automatic reply sent from my email (May 23-28 and July 5-14). During those weeks I may only be able to respond to email late in the evening or early in the morning.
Late Policy
Late homework will be accepted with a deduction of 10% per day and a maximum deduction of 50%. No late quizzes will be accepted and any missed exams must be scheduled before the exam.

Academic Misconduct

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the definitions, policies, and procedures concerning academic misconduct. This site also defines misconduct, provides examples of prohibited conduct, and explains the sanctions available for those found guilty of misconduct.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Mental Health Support Services
Support is available for any student experiencing mental health issues that are impacting their academic success. Students can either been seen at the University Counseling Center (UCC) located on the second floor of Goddard Health Center or receive 24/7/365 crisis support from a licensed mental health provider through TELUS Health. Religious Observance

Sessions of this course may be recorded or live-streamed. Registration and Withdrawal
If you choose to withdraw from this course, you must complete the appropriate University form and turn the form in before the deadline. If you stop attending the course and doing the coursework without doing the required paperwork, your grade will be calculated with missed homework and examination grades entered as zero. This could result in receiving a grade of F in the course. Emergency Protocol
During an emergency, there are official university procedures that will maximize your safety.
Severe Weather: If you receive an OU Alert to seek refuge or hear a tornado siren that signals severe weather.
- Look for severe weather refuge location maps located inside most OU buildings near the entrances.
- Seek refuge inside a building. Do not leave one building to seek shelter in another building that you deem safer. If outside, get into the nearest building.
- Go to the building’s severe weather refuge location. If you do not know where that is, go to the lowest level possible and seek refuge in an innermost room. Avoid outside doors and windows.
- Get in, Get Down, Cover Up
- Wait for official notice to resume normal activities.

Armed Subject/Campus Intruder
If you receive an OU Alert to shelter-in-place due to an active shooter or armed intruder situation or you hear what you perceive to be gunshots:
- Run: If you believe you can get out of the area WITHOUT encountering the armed individual, move quickly towards the nearest building exit, move away from the building, and call 911.
- Hide: If you cannot flee, move to an area that can be locked or barricaded, turn off lights, silence devices, spread out, and formulate a plan of attack if the shooter enters the room.
- Fight: As a last resort fight to defend yourself.

Course Reflection Survey
You’ll receive a Course Reflection Survey at the end of each semester for each course that you are enrolled in. I strongly encourage you to complete this survey. Your feedback can help me adjust my class for future semesters to help other students be successful. Your feedback is confidential and I will only receive it after final grades are due. Course Reflection Survey results may also factor into teaching evaluations and annual performance reviews and are shared with department and program chairs.
