Course Details

This course teaches students to how to create generative, virtual and augmented reality creative projects and experiences. This technique-intensive lab features weekly sequences of in-depth video tutorials covering introductory to advanced techniques for creating art and design projects in advanced, emerging visual technologies.

Course Prerequisites 

Graduate standing and Master of Arts in Art and Technology students only.

Goals, Pedagogy, and Practices

What we expect of you:

  • Be Prepared for every week. Approach each with new work to share with your professor. Be prepared for project feedback, and peer reviews each week. Students should have all required texts and materials as well as their computer and required software.
  • Communicate. Check your email and the Canvas site daily for class news, changes to the class schedule, cancellations, and updates.
    • Live Session attendance is not mandatory, but try to attend class if possible and actively participate. 
  • Digitally submit your work. All project materials must be submitted through Canvas to your professor. File titles must include full name, course number, semester, and project name.
  • Be Authentic. Grant credit to the designers, authors and creators whose work inspires and educates you. If using photos found online be certain to include a credit or citation. Cite all written sources whether quoted directly or paraphrased. See: the Student's Guide to Academic Integrity. The overall goal of this course is your learning. To demonstrate that you have reached this goal, the work you turn in needs to be your own. This includes putting written work into your own words and citing your sources, as appropriate to avoid plagiarism. 
  • Previous Instruction. Your education is cumulative. You are expected to use and build upon previous instruction, understanding, and ability to date.

What you can expect of your instructors:

  • To start and end class on time. 
  • To reply to canvas messages or emails within 48 hours.
  • To provide feedback or grades on assignments within one week of submission.
  • To assign projects, create duscussions and provide workshops that meet learning objectives of the course while adhering to time expectations for a 3-credit hour course.

Physical supplies

  • Computer with a microphone and camera. To get the most from this course you’ll need access to a VR class PC. Mac is acceptable, but Unity Play Mode testing on the headset will not be supported.
  • 3-button mouse

Software and online services

  • Unity You’ll need to install a Unity 2022.3 LTS version and we recommend using Unity Hub.
  • Spark AR
    • Note: A Meta Facebook login will be required in order to access this software.
  • Meta Spark Studio
  • Visual Studio Code
  • Discord
  • AI tool accounts and/or downloads - Dalle-E, Runway ML, Chat GPT, NVIDIA GauGAN Beta, Magenta, Open AI

Recommended

  • Meta Quest headsets are recommended for this course (Quest 3 and Pro are preferred)

VR Environments Create the environment in VR using Unity, host it on the web, and deploy the experience with a QR Code. 25%
Spark AR Filters Create an interactive Instagram or Facebook Meta filter. The filter can commemorate a holiday, event, or identity month (Black History Month, Pride Month, etc.) 25%
Web AR Experience Using the tool of your choice, create a web-based AR experience that users access from a custom trigger (QR code, image, etc.). 35%

Communication

I can be reached through Canvas and by email.  I will get back to you within 24 hours, Monday-Friday.

Late Policy

I do accept late work. Please try your best to stay on track so that you do not get overwhelmed by the semester's end.

We are all individuals with real lives outside of this class, which means the assigned timeline will not work for everyone, and that is okay, as long as you eventually turn in your assignments. If you are unable to turn in your assignments before grades are due you will receive an incomplete. Please turn in work, even if you do not feel like it is 'perfect' or fully complete. Remember: ideation, development process and progress toward an idea are just as important as the completion of an idea. In many cases, especially in a course where we are building new skills, the former is more important!

Class Failure

The only way you can fail this class is if the quality of your work is consistently unconsidered, lacking exploration, or created in a way that tells me that you are disengaged. Demonstrate that you tried your best and put intentionality into your work you will do very well in this class.
