About This Chapter

You learned the definition of conflict and its five characteristics—there needs to be an expressed struggle, interdependence, a perception of scarce resources, a perception of incompatible goals, and perceived interference from others. Once this foundational information was discussed, you overviewed the various cultural attitudes towards conflict, and you were given the different types of conflict. The text then outlined the five styles of conflict—avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, and collaboration—which then led to a description of cultural differences with regard to these aforementioned conflict styles. Finally, you learned how one can introduce conflict to engage in it, and you overviewed the steps of principled negotiation.
