Introduction and overview
Welcome to Introduction to Research Strategies!
Each week I will have a page like this one that outlines the objectives for the week, any readings or viewings, and your assignments and tasks. I suggest reading through the whole page before starting on readings and assignments.
Objectives:
- You should be aware of where to find starting points for research and where to get help for the questions you have.
- You should be prepared to start using Microsoft Word online through your Western Office 365 account for your research bibliography.
- You should have started to experiment with using the Zotero research management software.
- You should also know where to start looking for information on the Western Libraries website and how to contact a librarian for assistance.
Assignments and tasks
- Using your WWU Office 365 account, follow the research bibliography assignment formatting directions and use the template to create a document shared with my Western email address gabe.gossett@wwu.edu (be sure to make me an editor so I can add comments and make direct edits).
- Download Zotero Links to an external site. and register an account with the service online. Note: Some of you may encounter technical difficulty getting Zotero set up, which is not unusual. If you are having problems please contact me so I can assist you.
- Post to the class discussion.
Readings/viewings

- Either watch the video introduction to Zotero or go through the self-paced Prezi version of the introduction found on this page Links to an external site..
- Browse the Zotero support page Links to an external site.. You should know how to:
- Install Zotero browser extension and/or standalone
- Create an account
- Add an item to Zotero
- Review bibliographic details of an item
- Add tags to an item
- Add notes to an item
- Group items into folders
- Make a citation
- Email me any questions or concerns you might have and I will make a video addressing them for the whole class.
