CEES 5773: STRUCTURAL DESIGN - STEEL II

FALL 2024

Online Course - 3 credit hour

 

Prerequisites: CEES 3663 and senior or graduate standing

Textbooks: Structural Steel Design by Jack C. McCormac and Stephen F. Csernak, 6th Edition, Pearson Education, Inc., 2018, and the AISC Steel Construction Manual, 15th Edition, 2017.

Course Description: This course will examine structural steel connections; special considerations for steel beam design including holes in beams, concentrated forces, panel zones, stiffeners, and doubler plates; composite steel-concrete construction; stability and bracing. 

Course Objectives: To provide students with an advanced engineering practice-oriented analysis course. This course aims to expand and enrich knowledge, understanding, and application of structural steel.

Course Format: This course is entirely online. The course is made up of modules. Each module is made up of readings, lecture videos, discussions, Live Sessions, homework, quizzes and exams. The modules will open and close on specified dates. You will work through each module and complete the required tasks. You must complete the module and its contents before it closes. 

Course Topics: The following is a general list of the course topics.
1. Connections - fasteners, eccentric loading, prying action, welding, connection fixity
2. Special Considerations for Steel Beam Design - holes, concentrated forces, panel zones, stiffeners, doubler plates
3. Composite Steel-Concrete Construction - design, shear connectors, camber
4. Stability and Bracing

Live Sessions: Each week, you will participate in a Live Session via Zoom. Live Sessions are an opportunity for you to connect with your instructor and your classmates in real time to discuss topics of interest, ask questions, etc. The Live Sessions will be recorded and posted online for you to review, as needed. You will receive participation points for attending the Live Sessions. If you are unable to attend the Live Sessions, you will have the opportunity to complete an alternate assignment to make up the points. 

Homework: Problem sets will be given throughout the semester and will have a specified due date. Your solutions should be neatly organized on engineering paper, with each problem on a separate page (use the front of the paper only). You will scan and upload your assignments to Canvas for grading. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Quizzes: Course evaluation will include two quizzes, which will be short exams to test your knowledge. Quiz No. 1 will be during Week 6, and Quiz No. 2 will be during Week 13.

Exams: Course evaluation will include one midterm exam and the final exam. The midterm exam will be during Week 10, and the final exam will be during finals week.

Grades: The final course grade will be weighted as follows:

  •   Live Sessions:                                                               10%
  •   Quizzes:                                                                        20%
  •   Midterm Exam:                                                            25%
  •   Final Exam:                                                                   25%

Late Policy: Late assignments will not be accepted.
