Course Prerequisites

Each student should have completed FIN 5102.

We will assume that each student is comfortable with Excel and basic algebra. Although a prerequisite course in statistics is not required, I strongly suggest that you familiarize with the basics of statistics prior to this course if you haven't had a statistics course.

Course Materials

The textbook is Essentials of Investments by Bodie, Kane, and Marcus. I suggest that you read the most current edition (12th), but I don't think that earlier editions will be significantly different.

You will need to use Excel. For assignments 2, 3, and 4, you will need to have access to Excel on a PC that allows macros.

CFA Prep

Some of you will want to earn the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation. This course will provide you with the skills you will need to pass the Portfolio Theory portion of the exam.

Course Components

Assignments

There will be several graded assignments for this course. Each assignment is due at the start of class on the due date. You are allowed to refer to your textbook, class notes, or any other material I have provided you for this course. You may also discuss the assignments with classmates, though each student must turn in their own work. Late assignments will be accepted with reduced credit only if I have not yet provided or discussed the solutions. If an assignment is turned in after I have started discussing the solutions or provided them on Canvas, I cannot accept a late submission.

Exam

There will be a final exam shortly after our last class. It will be a timed exam on Canvas. You will be allowed to refer to your textbook, class notes, and any other material I have provided for you in this course. You may not refer to any materials other than what I just mentioned. You will not be allowed to discuss the exam with classmates or anyone else.

Attendance

Attendance is part of your grade for the course. You will receive full attendance credit for the week if you are present during the entire class with your camera turned on. If, in the rare event, you are not able to attend an in-class session, you can still receive full attendance points if you watch the recording of the class and email a detailed two-page summary of what was covered within a few days of the class. I reserve the right to limit how many times during the semester you can do this.
