Course Schedule
Course Components
Readings
Each week you will have purposefully chosen readings from the textbook chapters. In order to participate and learn in the course assessments and to get to master the course concepts, you will need to thoroughly read the assigned material ahead of time. Your assigned reading can be completed with a physical book or the e-book in Connect.
To complete your readings, consider setting a schedule to adhere to each week. This may be time that you set aside to read everything at once. Alternatively, it may work better for you to set incremental goals and break the readings into more manageable chunks. The SmartBook resource (detailed below) will help you pause during your readings to apply concepts and test your knowledge.
Concept Overview Videos
The Concept Overview Videos (COVs) will be the second step in each module, after the textbook readings, of engaging with new information. The COVs via Connect will complement and extend the material presented in the textbook through a more hands-on approach of teaching the module learning objectives. Each COV assignment will have a graded question to answer at the end of the video, taken and assessed in Connect.
SmartBook Assignments
These assignments will be the first piece of practice application in each module. After encountering new material through the assigned textbook chapters and Concept Overview Videos, you will be ready to apply new concepts to test your understanding of learning objectives. Your SmartBook assignments will engage you in reading further about key topics and practicing your understanding of the material through guided questions.
The SmartBook tool is a learning and reading support via Connect that will help individualize your understanding of new content by prompting you with questions as you review course material. The SmartBook tool, like your instructor, assesses your understanding of the questions based on your answers and will adapt subsequent information to help you with topics where you might need more practice or support.
Use your time with the SmartBook assignments to ensure you’re both understanding and retaining the material from this module. If you find you need a refresher on the content, you can always revisit your textbook chapters and Concept Overview Videos. These assignments will be completed and assessed in Connect.
Homework Assignments with Instructor-Led Videos
As a second practice application of module content, you will complete a homework assignment in each module. These assignments provide feedback on your mastery of learning objectives and are auto-graded, meaning that feedback is provided immediately.
As a support to you in this asynchronous course, each homework assignment will be accompanied in the weekly module with an instructor-led video. These videos simulate a real-time session spent with the instructor walking you through the context and rationale for the homework concepts, the navigation of the Connect platform, and other associated resources needed for the assignment (e.g. using Excel spreadsheets). These assignments will be completed and assessed in Connect.
Mastery Quizzes
In each module, you will be assessed on your understanding of the content presented in the readings, Content Overview Videos, SmartBook and Homework assignments by taking a Mastery Quiz.
You will have 90 minutes to complete these quizzes and only one attempt. These quizzes will be completed and assessed in Connect. You may use the ebook and other material in Connect for the quizzes, but no other source of information should be used.
Final Exam
You will have one final exam. The exam will consist approximately of 50% of the material covered in the final module (chapter 12) and 50% of the material covered in previous modules (primarily chapters 2 and 5-11). In other words, the final exam is comprehensive. This exam must be completed within 120 minutes and must be taken during the scheduled exam window. You may use the ebook and other material in Connect for the final exam, but no other source of information should be used.
