Assumed Prior Knowledge
This course assumes limited prior knowledge. Students should have basic exposure to data analysis concepts, statistics, and tools such as Excel. Having this experience will help as we will be using R and RStudio (and some Tableau). Any exposure to basic programming concepts is a bonus.
Course Overview
The activities, content, and assignments in this course will help you be able to do the following:
- Approach business problems data-analytically.
- Think carefully and systematically about whether and how data and business analytics can improve business performance.
- Prepare and analyze data, and generate business insights.
- Demonstrate proper handling of data, including the problem of missing data.
- Choose the appropriate statistical model for a business problem.
- Demonstrate the use of analytical methods across a range of industries, but particularly the aerospace and defense industry.
- Propose and answer research questions.
The class will consist of combinations of:
- Lectures and discussions prepared and led by the instructor
- Workshops
- Analytics group project
- Some writing

Course Components
Participation
For the design of this class to work, students must be actively involved in the class.
Active involvement consists of three components: (1) class attendance; (2) reading and thinking about the material before coming to class; and (3) sharing of and discussing thoughts and ideas.
To receive participation, you must do the participation exercises scheduled for each class and submit them during class.
Quizzes
Cover the previous lecture materials (including supplementary material) and assigned reading. You'll have ~6 days to complete the quiz.
Typically, there are about 10 questions and you'll have 30 minutes to complete. We'll go over the answers during class.
Individual Assignments
Consist of short answer/response, programming using R, exercises in Tableau, etc.
Project Milestones
In groups, you will work on a project throughout the course. You will submit your work at key milestones for comment and feedback.
Project Report & Presentation
Your group will bring together all of the milestones into one final report. You will also be asked to reflect on your process, explain how feedback along the way was incorporated, and describe how the feedback impacted your final submission. Only one report will be submitted on behalf of your group. Your contribution to the project group will be assessed by your peers and may affect your grade. Additionally, you will present your findings to the class during our last class session.

Late Policy
Assignments are expected to be completed and delivered in a timely manner. In the event of unavoidable circumstances that may require an assignment to be delivered late, the student should contact me in advance in order to determine whether the assignment will be accepted late, and with or without penalty.

Long before the University of Oklahoma was established, the land on which the University now resides was the traditional home of the “Hasinais” Caddo Nation and “Kirikirʔi:s” Wichita & Affiliated Tribes.

Final Exam Preparation Period
Pre-finals week will be defined as the seven calendar days before the first day of finals. Faculty may cover new course material throughout this week. For specific provisions of the policy please refer to OU's Final Exam Preparation Period policy.
