Course Prerequisites 

Admission to the online MS in Applied Statistics program

Course Materials

There is no required textbook. All materials will be provided on Canvas. This will include links, lecture videos, and slide presentations.

We will be using various free software. Please feel free to work ahead if you would like, but if you do, you may run into issues because of version changes for the software we will use. I will be sure updates are made before the typical start of each module. If you run into issues, please email me to let me know.

Quizzes In each module, you will complete a quiz after reviewing the module resources. You will have one attempt with unlimited time. You must submit your quiz prior to the Live Session, during which the professor will review the answers. 30%
Practical Assignments At the end of each module, you will submit documents in which you solve a practical problem using the coding skills taught within the module. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about this during the Live Sessions. 50%
Labs
Before the Live Session, you will complete 2 labs, each with step-by-step guidance on how to complete a process using the skills you have learned. 20%

Course Grading Structure

  1. Modules:

    • The course consists of 8 modules.
    • Each module carries equal weightage towards the final grade.
  2. Components within each Module:

    • Quiz: Worth 30% of the module.
      • Total Points: 6 (1 point per question)
    • Labs: Worth 20% of the module (10% for each lab).
      • Total Points for each lab: 50
    • Assignment: Worth 50% of the module.
      • Total Points: 100

Grade Calculation for a Module:

To calculate the grade of a specific module let's assume the following if you get the following score:

  • Quiz: 5 out of 6
  • Lab1: 50 out of 50
  • Lab2: 50 out of 50
  • Assignment: 96 out of 100

The calculation for the module would be:

  • Quiz Percentage: (5/6) * 30 = 25 out of 30
  • Labs Percentage: [(50/50) * 10] + [(50/50) * 10] = 20 out of 20
  • Assignment Percentage: (96/100) * 50 = 48 out of 50

Total for this module = 25 + 20 + 48 = 93 out of 100=93%

Final Course Grade:

To calculate the final grade for the course, you would:

  • Calculate the total percentage earned in each module (as shown above).
  • Sum up the percentages of all 8 modules.
  • Divide by 8 (as there are 8 modules with equal weight).

For example, if you scored 93%, 87%, 90%, 95%, 88%, 92%, 85%, and 94% in the 8 modules respectively, your final grade would be the average of these percentages.

Final Grade = (93+87+90+95+88+92+85+94) / 8 = 90.5%


Course Components

Module Introductions

Each module will contain an introduction with a description of what the module is about, the basics of the module problem that you will need to solve, the objectives of the module, and a to-do list. This will prime you for what to focus on as you work through the module.

Resources

Each module will provide the foundational information needed for the quiz and practical assignment in the module. These resources will consist of websites and video lectures, with a PDF of lecture slides provided as well.

Quizzes

After reviewing the resources, you will complete a quiz to assess your foundational knowledge. These will be due before the Live Sessions.

Labs

Before the Live Sessions, you must also complete 2 labs. These will walk you through how to complete a process using the component skills learned in a step-by-step fashion.

Live Sessions

On even weeks, you will have Live Sessions. While you may choose to watch the recording later rather than attend live, it is highly encouraged that you attend these to help you succeed on the practical assignments. Before the Live Sessions, you will be expected to look at the module assignments and brainstorm questions and ideas to bring to the Live Session. During the Live Sessions, there will be time for Q & A as well as workshopping. The instructor will also give corrective feedback on the quizzes.

Practical Assignments

The last item of the module, after the Live Session, will be the practical assignment. You will be expected to apply the concepts presented in the module to solve a given problem. To do well on these, you should brainstorm and practice before the Live Session and bring questions with you to the Live Session.

In addition to our Live session every other week, you can also communicate with me by email (yyoussef@ou.edu) or book an appointment for office Hours. Please feel free to address me by my first name, Yasser.

You can expect a response within 24 hours Monday through Friday and longer wait times on weekends and holidays.

Please feel free to reach me about anything that prohibits you from being able to participate in this class. Any discussion with me will always be confidential and will never affect your course progress.

Feedback 

The feedback and grades on the activities and assignments usually take at most one-week after the deadline.

Late Policy

Late submissions will not be accepted unless you provide a prior email before the deadline asking for an excuse to extend the deadline. Based on your excuse, there may or may not be a penalty for the late submission.

Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is basically no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.
