Course Format
The format for this course is Synchronous Online. Learning occurs online and in real-time, using web-conferencing software for synchronous interaction (Zoom). Live Sessions take place every week.
Course Prerequisites
The prerequisite for this course is ACCT 2113, ACCT 5202, or ACCT 5232. Additionally, I will assume you are comfortable with debit/credit mechanics, a basic chart of accounts, and financial statement layout and interaction. See Chapter 2 (Accounting Review) of the textbook to review these topics on your own.

- Intermediate Accounting, 11th edition, by Spiceland, Nelson, Thomas, and Winchel
- Connect access code (includes an electronic version of the entire book)
- Note that if you took ACCT 2113 or ACCT 5232 at OU, you already purchased the required textbook that comes with an access code to Connect. That access code provides an 18-month subscription to Connect effective from the date of activation. As long as you have time remaining in that 18-month window, you will be able to use the same access code in ACCT 5252 that you used previously. Course Components
Graded Reading
The assigned readings provide a deeper dive into each topic.
SmartBook contains the same content as the print book. The online version actively tailors the content to the needs of the individual. The adaptive technology provides precise, personalized instruction on what the student should do next, guiding the student to master and remember key concepts, targeting gaps in knowledge and offering customized feedback, and driving the student toward comprehension and retention of the accounting for assets and investments.
Live Sessions
Join the weekly Live Session and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions and interact with fellow students in real-time. If you have a scheduling conflict that prohibits you from attending the Live Session on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm (Central), you have the opportunity to view the recording of our virtual meeting. The Live Session recording will be posted on that week's Live Session page within 48 hours after the virtual meeting.
Homework
Homework provides feedback on student’s mastery of learning objectives. Homework may be attempted two times; only the highest grade counts. The assignments are auto-graded, and feedback is provided immediately.
Exams
In this course, you will have 2 midterm exams and 1 comprehensive final exam. You will have 2 hours to take each midterm exam and 3 hours to take the final exam. Exams must be taken during the scheduled exam window (2 days). Exams will be submitted automatically in Connect at the due date.
If an exam is missed due to an excused absence, then the percentage score of the final exam will be applied to the missed exam. Approval for missing an exam must be obtained before the exam window. No points will be received for a missed exam if you do not obtain approval before the exam.

Communication

- If you have general questions about the class (assignments, class logistics, due dates, etc.), post a question in the HELP BOARD in the “Start Here” module. You can post questions about the course here throughout the semester.
- If you have a personal question (grades, feedback, requests for special accommodation, etc.) please send me an email (anewton@ou.edu). In some cases, it might be helpful if you could send a screenshot of the issue. During the work week (Monday-Friday), you can expect a response from me within 24 hours. During weekends (Saturday-Sunday), you can expect a response from me within 48 hours.

Feedback
Students can expect grades on assignments within one week of their due date. For some assignments, including homework, feedback is available immediately within Connect.
Late Policy
All graded assignments must be completed by the assigned due date. No late work will be accepted. Pre-session and post-session assignments are to be completed on Connect and will be submitted automatically in Connect at the due date.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the most common form of academic misconduct at OU. There is no college-level assignment that can be satisfactorily completed by copying. OU's basic assumption about writing is that all written assignments show the student's own understanding in the student's own words. That means all writing assignments, in class or out, are assumed to be composed entirely of words generated (not simply found) by the student, except where words written by someone else are specifically marked as such with proper citation. Including other people's words in your paper is helpful when you do it honestly and correctly. When you don't, it's plagiarism.

Generative AI Policy
We learn best when we are actively engaged in the process of completing all aspects of an assignment. Even the brainstorming and initial draft phase is a time of discovery that is an integral part of your learning. To empower you to fully engage in the learning process, the use of Generative AI, including, but not limited to, ChatGPT, CoPilot, ClaudeAI, Gemini, and Grammarly AI, is considered a violation of the academic integrity policy for this course. As the use of Generative AI to assist in completing any aspect of work for this course is prohibited, this includes using Generative AI to write outlines, conduct research, to write or edit your papers, and to take your quizzes or exams. If using an e-book or search engine that has integrated Generative AI, then you should not rely on the Generative AI output and engage instead with the source material.
