Prerequisites

  • ACCT 5202 (Financial Accounting)
  • A majority of the financial valuation involved in this course will be implemented in Microsoft Excel. Excel modeling/calculation for investment purposes will be built on top of basic Excel skills. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you already have a working knowledge of Excel.

Course Materials

  • Essentials of Investments, by Bodie, Kane, and Marcus 10th Ed (Abbreviated as BKM). Publisher: McGraw-Hill, ISBN: 978- 0077835422
  • Lecture Notes - posted on Canvas. While my lecture notes do NOT serve as sufficient substitute for the textbook chapters, they will attempt to cover the majority of the topics for the course. It is highly recommended that you feel totally comfortable with lecture notes.
  • Excel Spreadsheets - posted on Canvas. There Excel spreadsheets provide detailed explanations/formula/functions for most of the examples in the lecture notes. You are strongly encouraged to review them before and after each live session.
  • Final Exam Study Guide - posted on Canvas. The study guide is designed to help you better prepare for the final exam.

Grades

Your final grade will depend on your class attendance and participation, homework, assignment, and final exam. Other assigned work, not specified in the syllabus but announced in class or on course web page, may include an assigned quiz or period examination status.

The distribution of the overall grade is as follows:

Class attendance/participation 20%
Homework 20%
Individual take-home assignment 20%
Final Exam 40%

Please note the grade cutoffs for A, B, C, D are 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% respectively. Grades are rounded to the nearest percent (i.e. 89.5% rounds to 90% while 89.4% rounds to 89%).

Course Components

Attendance & Participation

You are strongly encouraged to actively participate in each class. This can be accomplished by answering questions during the Live Sessions, asking clarification questions, raising thought-provoking questions, demonstrating specific skills in class, providing timely and constructive feedback etc. Over the course of the term, the instructor will determine the class participation grade for each of you on the basis of observed class participation. The instructor’s decision is final.

Zoom Live Session

Your participation is mandatory and will count toward your final grade. For each live session, your log in will be cross-checked against the attendance tracker in Zoom.

Attendance and active participation will greatly benefit you in your final exam and overall grade. However, I am sympathetic to circumstances which demand your presence elsewhere. If you are aware of a planned absence, please let me know at least 24 hours in advance. If you have a justifiable emergency (that can be reasonably documented), please contact me at your earliest convenience. You must obtain my written approval in order to be exempt from the class absence penalty. Penalties will be assessed for skipping classes with non-justifiable reasons. Students will receive a reduction in their final course average equal to 1 point for each class missed without any valid reasons.

For excused absences, you will be required to review the recorded Live Session and then write a paragraph summarizing the Live Session from your perspective.

Homework

There will be homework following the conclusion of each chapter that is covered. Homework helps improve your understanding of the topics. It is required that you complete all homework on time under normal circumstances. At the end of the course, your homework completion record will be reviewed to determine your homework grade.

Individual Take-home Assignment

You will need to turn this assignment in on time. Please follow the instructions provided in the assignment and submit your complete work on time using Canvas.

Final Exam

The final exam will be a take-home exam with essay questions. Please follow the instructions on the final exam and submit your complete work via Canvas.

Disclaimer

Your final grade will depend on your attendance in Live Sessions and participation, homework, assignment, mid-term and final exams. Other assigned work, not specified in the syllabus but announced in class or on course web page, may be assigned quiz or period examination status.

In addition, the instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus if deemed appropriate by the instructor.

Communication

  • If you have general questions about assignments, class logistics, due dates, etc., please post a question in the HELP BOARD in the “Start Here” module. You can post questions about the course here throughout the semester.
  • If you have a personal question (grades, feedback, requests for special accommodation, etc.) please email me directly. My OU email is synchronized with my mobile devices. In the subject line, write “FIN-5302 online" before your subject. For example, if you have a question about a grade, your email subject would read “FIN-5302 online – grade inquiry”.
  • Do NOT use the 'Inbox' tab in Canvas. I'm more likely to respond to you more quickly if you email me directly at: xuewu.wang@ou.edu

All email sent by your professors will be sent to the email registered in your name at the University of Oklahoma.

If you wish to also receive course emails at another email address, go to your profile in Canvas and you can add 1 or more alternate emails to your account.
