This article discusses ways to communicate assignments to students to make them less likely to use AI. It also provides a way to address suspected AI use without harsh penalties. Strategies include:

  1. Clarifying Expectations – Grading prioritizes argument strength, source use, and critical thinking over mechanics. Students are encouraged to develop their own writing style without relying on AI tools like Grammarly.
  2. Emphasizing Relevance – Explicitly linking assignments to course goals helps students see their work as meaningful rather than arbitrary.
  3. Reinforcing Student Voice – Multiple checkpoints and scaffolding ensure students’ writing style is recognized, reducing the temptation to use AI-generated content. Highlighting AI’s generic output further reinforces the value of original work.
  4. Addressing AI Use Proactively – Suspected AI use leads to an interview where students must explain their ideas and sources. If they struggle, they can revise their work rather than facing harsh penalties, discouraging future reliance on AI.
